The twins' plan for Elvira and Oliver came to an abrupt halt on the evening before Oliver and Dorothea's patrol was planned. Students had received their copies of The Daily Prophet in the evening post, and a sour mood had settled. Ezra Nott had been particularly pestering Dorothea about whether she had had post, or if she had read her post. When her owl dropped a copy of the paper in front of her, there was a huge photograph of Ezra, eyes sparkling, shaking hands with the minister with Barnaby in the background - a hand on his son's shoulder. Ezra was grinning from ear to ear in the great hall, looking around at practically everyone reading it and then looking up at him.
EZRA NOTT - NEW MINISTRY ROLE
What he missed, but Dorothea didn't, was the look of disgust on so many students faces. Elvira was reading it sat alone, biting her tongue to hold back any tears that threatened her. Dorothea scanned the article, it detailed Ezra's new job, and in turn, the ministry's new policy on muggle born witches and wizards. Every muggle born would soon have to declare themselves in the next few years, and then provide proof of their Hogwarts acceptance, and then eventually, the plan was to find some way to prove that their wands belonged to them. Dorothea could not hold back her shock as she read, covering her mouth with her hand and shaking her head. Such hate.
The entirety of the Great Hall seemed to be watching Dorothea Rosier and Ezra Nott. It was a well known fact that Dorothea had never called anybody a mudblood, she had even given Draco Malfoy a detention for it in his second year.
Ezra was beaming at her, eagerly awaiting her approval.
The witch turned and glanced at Elvira, seeing her eyes shining with tears, and threw the paper at him, hard, so it hit him in the chest.
"This," she spat, "is fucking disgraceful."
Ezra said nothing, his mouth opening and then closing again, utterly confused.
"Such blatant hate and fear mongering," she said to him, not bothered that the entire hall was listening. "This stealing magic message was proven to be bullshit years ago. I can guarantee that half of the muggle borns here are ten times smarter than you."
"I-I thought you'd be happy for me," he croaked, embarrassed. "I'm the youngest to-"
"You're a fucking idiot and nothing but a puppet for your father," the witch snapped, standing up and walking away from the Slytherin table. Elvira, grateful for a chance to escape, jumped up and followed the witch.
"Thea!" Ezra called after her, also standing up, but then groaning and sitting back down, head in his hands. Even his house wasn't looking at him the way that he expected them to. Draco and the younger Crabbe and Goyle had congratulated him, nodding enthusiastically. So had Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson. The boys from his year said nothing, Adrian meeting Leila's eye and nodding slightly, Marcus Flint looking rather awkward about the entire situation, and Leo and Felix looking ever so slightly disappointed. Ezra looked to the girls for support.
Priscilla, never one to not voice her opinion cleared her throat and said, "I think it's pretty fucked, to be honest, Ezra. Completely understand where Thea is coming from."
Dolores Umbridge, who had been watching reactions to the news from the teachers table stood up and spoke out, "detention, Miss Parkinson."
Albus Dumbledore leant forwards, "Miss Parkinson is simply expressing an opinion, which she is free to do," he looked at the girl, "you shan't have a detention, Priscilla."
"To go against Mr Nott, Albus, is to go against the Ministry, and by extension the Minister himself-"
"I find it hard to believe that Cornelius holds such prejudice, Dolores."
