Sometimes expectations are just too high

Misun stopped, watching the reporter prolix about the recent updates about the unexpected arrival of the spaceship, just endless yakking about the examined residue scientists got from the ship and how it held possibilities of elements that could belong to a species that was clearly not like humans. The ravenette scoffed, proceeding to head on, she already knew about that, one technically just flew past her. They were slow with their updates and it made her very angry.
She stopped underneath a flickering lamp post, afraid of taking a step forward.
Ever since she left the news spot, the feeling of being followed didn't falter. Of course she was no dummy, she knew better than to walk around at night, but she had to, it was an expectation.
She just needed to stay somewhere lit, no matter what was following her wouldn't dare step into the light, right? Even a phantom wouldn't, those things weren't true fans of the light, thus, the reason they were scarce by day. Misun only wondered how long until they built up an immunity to it.
The black haired waited for a sound.
But it was dead silent, now the perks of staying in a really quiet neighbourhood didn't feel so favourable.
“I see you've noticed my presence,” A low gruff resonated from the shadows, followed by a manly chuckle. “Why don't you come over and say hi to me, hm?”
Misun sucked in a breath, squinting just so she could catch a glimpse of whoever was talking to her, the silence dragging on.
“You're quite rude,” the male sneered, pulling out a pistol from his parka's pockets, his shot directed on the lamppost. The black haired screeched, crutching down to protect her face, the shards of glass landing violently on her knuckles, definitely leaving cut marks. “Are you scared of the dark?” he chuckled, coming closer.
She was right, it was scared of the light. Misun slowly opened her eyes, his figure barely visible in the new darkness he created, but she could make out that floating green mushroom phantom encircling his leg, forcing itself into the stranger's skin.
These creatures didn't have a figure of their own, copying whatever object they desired.
“Don't worry, I'll keep you safe,” the male yanked her up and she was met with his cocky face. He was older, but not too far from her age, way taller and his arm's strength was no joke. He lifted her higher, her legs shimming, the grip he had on her shirt ran right across her neck, choking the shorter.
“Let me go,” Misun wriggled, her teeth clenched and voice grim. The black haired heaved backwards, placing her legs together as she swung back to her attacker, jamming him right on his chest. He stumbled and fell, dropping her in the process, his gun sliding across the street.
The male laughed, coughing from how hard she had hit him, his skin slowly turning neon, pleopods growing out of him. “Go on, shoot me,” he snarled at the female who had run up to the gun, pointing it at him.
Misun hesitated, her hands shaky.
She could barely hear him mocking her for being a frail little girl over the sound of those voice echoing in her head, this time no ticking clock, it was more like droplets of water dripping into a pool, but it was the over sensitive sound on blood dribbling down her knuckles.
Kill him, he's turning into one anyway. Kill him and have your revenge.
“Just like I said we–”
Misun shut her eyes tight, pulling the trigger six times, until she could no longer hear his shrill. The phantom crawled out of his body, howling as it flew away from where they stood.
And right before her eyes, his body combusted, the flame quickly dying down, not a single speck of him remaining.
“I'm sorry,” Misun yelped, her hand over her mouth. She tossed the gun aside, picked-up her bag, before running away from the scene.
Unaware of the pair of eyes watching her.
