Yep,
You heard that right.
BTS, the K-pop group, stole my friend Maine.
Mayyybe not literally, but if you read the Butterfly Effect chapter, you know what I mean.
*Clarification for extra dramatic BTS fans who don't get sarcasm🙄* This is not a BTS hate post. They didn't literally come to my town and kidnapped people. Also, no, I don't hate them, but I do relate them to the story, and that's why the hyperbole comment is in here. In other words, don't come hating on me because of talking about BTS. Literally, nobody cares—not even the group members themselves.
As promised, today I'll be explaining more about what happened with Maine. I really don't feel 100% confident in sharing this, but recently, it has been a scenario that has me thinking "WTF" on a daily basis.
As I have talked about before, Maine was a childhood friend of mine. We were super close in high school, and when we went to college, we stayed in contact. Here she became closer with Lola's sister (who I've talked about before and explained that she is a nice drama queen). This is important later in the story, but just know that Maine used to be close with me and Lola's sister, who I'm going to call Fiona for ease of understanding.
During our uni years, everything was normal; every once in a while, Maine and I would hang out; other times, she would go out with Fiona, and once or twice, the 3 of us would go out together.
Now, I started noticing a change in her sometime around 2020. Years before, I was interested in Korean culture because my grandma had introduced me to it. It was really fun because around that time, the Korean wave hadn't necessarily hit as aggressively as it had now, and I knew only one person (Tia) besides my grandma to who I could talk about this. I naturally talked about Korea with other friends of mine, including Maine, only to be rejected. I remember Maine specifically said "How do you watch Korean dramas if you don't understand the language? Reading subtitles? Ew!"
Now, around 2020 she came to my house once. I noticed a huge change in her style. She used to have a cutesy, boho and sometimes aesthetic vibe to her. She now wore a lot of streetwear, baggy clothes, and straight-up Korean-inspired looks (this isn't bad, but it is something that will come up to play later). Plus, she had a very subtle BTS bag. I didn't ask if it was BTS related because I didn't want to have to explain myself if I was wrong with my guess, and it was super subtle, like, it didn't have their logo or anything in Korean, but it had a line image of a flower similar to one, for their albums (this one to be specifically).
