Aarohi…
It's 4 in the evening, and I'm waiting for Rikshit at the cafe, as usual. The place was cozy an comforting. But today, none of that eases the knot of anxiety twisting in my stomach. Today, everything is different.
I glance around, trying to distract myself from the surroundings. My mind is elsewhere, focused on the envelope in my bag. Inside are the proofs of all his cheating and proofs of bank account transactions which Rudra gave me. I've replayed this moment in my head countless times, but now that it's here, I feel a wave of nervous anticipation.
How did it come to this? The late-night calls, the suspicious text messages, the unexplained absences—it all started to add up. Today is the day I will lay it all out.
The bell above the door rang, and I looked up to see Rikshit walking in. He spots me and smiles, that same easy-going smile that used to make my heart flutter. Now, it just makes me sad. Does he have any idea what's coming?
He approaches to the table, and I straighten up, clutching the envelope a little tighter under the table. My heart pounds as he takes a seat across from me.
"Hey," he says, leaning in to kiss my cheek. I force a smile, my heart aching with the weight of what I’m about to do.
"Hi," I reply, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "We need to talk."
His brows furrow slightly, and he leans back, sensing the seriousness in my tone. I take a deep breath, feeling the envelope in my lap like a lead weight.
"I know about the cheating, Rikshit. And the property things with my uncle" I said.
His face goes pale, and for a moment, he looks like a deer caught in headlights. The cafe around us seems to fade away, leaving just the two of us in this tense moment.
“What cheating and property?” he asked.
“The girl in this picture and these transactions about your previous scams and now you have planned this with my uncle and can I ask about the percentage sharing?” I said in a furious tone.
His face seemed to lose all expression, and his mouth went dry. He took a sip of water, tried to sit straight, and adjusted himself in the unannounced, sudden situation.
Then, he took the documents and pictures from the table and carefully started observing them.
“So, you know everything,” he stated with no expression of guilt and regret, which made me a bit surprised, like how can someone have no shame?
“Care to explain,” I said
“What’s there to explain?” he scoffed, his voice dripping with disdain.
“Your uncle, your own uncle, planned everything. He wanted your grandparents’ property to fund his business venture and asked me to join his scheme.
"He knew very well that you would never willingly part with the property because of your deep love for your grandparents. But he’s a cunning man, I’ll give him that. He knew the only way to get you out of the picture was to marry you off. That way, he could manipulate your father into handing over the property. And your father, I’ve never seen such a fool! So blinded by his brotherly love, he agreed to the marriage without a second thought. Yet, you proved to be the clever one. You exposed the truth.” he ended.
