until it all changed.
until she changed it.

AUGUST 4TH, 2019, NEW ROCHELLE.
"i just can't come between them, they've got their own thing." INBETWEEN , gracie abrams
CASSIE HAD ONLY ATTENDED the final set, the final few minutes of it. truthfully, she didn't want to go, she didn't want to be there, with art, with patrick, tashi, she just couldn't do it, the guilt she had ever since art left her hotel room was weighing down on her.
it would be like the college love square all over again, but she persevered, she went.
cassie walked into the court, her heels clicking, as if announcing herself.
patrick and art turned to her, watching her walk to the stands. as did a few members of the crowd, she hated to admit it, but she liked being well known sometimes, the way people muttered amongst themselves as she found her way to her seat, her father glaring at her.
cassie sat in the front row, in between daniel.
and tashi duncan.
cassie swore under her breath as she sat down, crossing her legs over each other, looking at the two men that stood on the court.
tashi let out a small scoff, "good coaching, barely showed up for the match."
cassie rolled her eyes at her, the first words that she uttered to cassie in about 10 years, being full of malice.
cassie would be a liar if she said she didn't miss tashi, she did. the two were practically lovers at some point, and they both knew that, they didn't care, but, here they were, glaring at each-other.
"fuck off tashi." she muttered, leaning back against her chair, smoothing her black skirt down.
"sorry, i just thought you'd be here, maybe helping him cheat into a win."
"well, you'd know a lot about cheating." cassie turned to her, giving her a sarcastic smile.
tashi scoffed quietly, shaking her head at her, taking her eyes back to the match, tapping her sunglasses on the palm of her hand. "well, it's not ideal when your husband always talks about how much he regrets losing 'someone'." tashi spoke, looking over at art.
cassies eyes widened, she felt as though tashi had just reached out and took her heart. she just shook her head, turning her gaze back to the court.
on the court stood a sweaty patrick, his black tank top clinging to his sides, hair glued to his forehead. a smug look plastered on his face as he looked at art.
arts face was dreadful, cassies heart sunk when she saw him, he was staring at the ground, tennis ball in his hand as he looked over at patrick, as if he had every emotion on his face,
art glanced over at cassie in the stands, feeling his shoulders relax as he caught sigh of her. cassie gave him a thin smile, which he returned, honestly, if art wasn't playing a match right now, he'd match over there and kiss her until he was at his last breath.
yes, art was aware that patrick and tashi had slept together, he was fucking angry.
but, he couldn't be, he couldn't be when every ounce of his heart didn't belong to tashi, it was cassies. art stood flicking the wedding band that sat on his ring finger, what he would give to re start, to have a do over.
he stood there, staring at the green floor of the court, thinking of all the times he had been with cassie, that time before halloween, christmas, the night they had a few days ago.
he would change it all, he would have cassie as his wife, he would be there when dahlia was born, he would know that he was her dad, and she would know that. he would give cassie whatever she wanted, he would do anything for her, and not just because he didn't want her to leave.
that was the difference. with tashi, art did what she wanted him to do, he wore what she wanted him to wear, acted how how she wanted him to, just so he could be the perfect husband for her. he spent most of his nights terrified that tashi would leave him, he didn't know why, all he did was love her, so he overworked himself, and loved her too much, not because he wanted to, because he felt as though he had to, so he wouldn't be abandoned. that was his biggest fear, yet, part of art just wished that she would leave him.
but when art was with cassie, he didn't force himself to love her, it just came out, she consumed his every thought, and every thought of his future. art thought back to when he proposed to tashi, and instead, pictured cassie, cassie was meant to be his wife. that's all he wanted, that's all he ever wanted. he wanted to be a father to dahlia, and more of their children, he just wanted her.
art brought the neon ball to the neck of his racket, his eyes meeting his former best friends that stood across from him, his confused face staring right back at arts.
the corner of arts mouth perked up, forming a smirk, his expression doing all the talking for patrick.
patrick smirked back at him in relief. as if they were 18 again, fire and ice.
art hit the ball up, serving it to patrick with a loud 'thwaaack!'
cassie watched them play, as her and tashi simultaneously leant forward, elbows on their knees.
watching the boys play like this was what cassie had hoped for, ever since she felt as though she was the bomb which ruined their friendship.
they moved perfectly together, both smiling as they hit the ball, neon flying across the court.
it was as if with every hit of that ball, they were speaking to eachother, it was fucking amazing.
the crowds heads weren't moving side to side anymore, they became fixating in the middle, as the two played, they inched their way closer to the net.
it was intense, it was natural in a way.
cassie leant forward.
as patrick hit the ball, art jumped up, ready to hit it, he was about to send himself falling over the net, coming down from his jump.
but patrick caught him.
tashi gripped cassies knee, both girls turning to eachother, beaming with a smile as they watched the game end in front of them.
patrick and art held eachother in a right embrace, they had eachother back, they both had their bestfriend back, nobody could tell if they were about to cry, or kiss actually.
the crowd all leapt up, clapping their hands together.
the two girls in the front row jumped up, tashi screaming "come on!" if you didn't know tashi, you'd assume she was furious by the nature of her scream.
but she was happy, and so was cassie, the two girls turned to eachother, holding eachother in a tight embrace, much like the boys in front of them did.
they all had eachother back.
but most importantly, cassie had art back. like she alwayswanted.
