Two years had passed since Emma had left Rivertown, seeking a fresh start in New York. The city had offered her a new life, far from the memories and heartbreak that had once consumed her. But despite the excitement and challenges of her career as a sous chef in a renowned New York restaurant, Rivertown never left her thoughts. The idea of returning to the coastal town tugged at her heart until she finally decided to take the leap.

Emma had been quietly planning her return for months, buying a house in Rivertown with the intent to make it her sanctuary. It was a two-story home, nestled away from the village where her parents lived, yet close enough to the beach to bring her the peace she desperately sought. The thought of having a place of her own, where she could find solace in the sound of the waves, was what finally pushed her to resign from her job and book a one-way ticket back to her roots.

Landing on a Friday afternoon, Emma booked a cab and headed straight to her new home. As the cab wound through familiar streets, she thought about the life she was leaving behind in New York and the new one she was about to begin. She also pondered buying a car, knowing it would be necessary for her new, quieter life in Rivertown. And then there was the matter of her parents—especially her father. Their bond had been fractured for years, and she knew it was time to face that part of her past, no matter how difficult.

When Emma finally arrived at her house, she was greeted by an empty space, waiting to be filled with her presence and personality. The house was perfect—a two-story, three-bedroom retreat, with a master bedroom that had a balcony facing the sea. She could already envision the one room downstairs becoming a storage space for her surfing gear, the upstairs guest room ready for visitors, and the third bedroom transformed into her study. The interior design resonated with her style, especially the kitchen, which she instantly loved.

Stepping into the backyard, Emma found a small garden and imagined planting herbs there, adding a table and recliners to enjoy the ocean view. "This house is perfect," she whispered to herself, excitement bubbling up as she thought about furnishing her new home.

Just as she was about to leave for the furniture shop, a car pulled up in front of her house. She watched curiously as the driver stepped out, revealing a familiar face—Ashton.

"Emma?" Ashton called out, his smile wide with surprise as he walked toward her.

"Ashton," she greeted him warmly, pulling him into a hug.

"How have you been? When did you get back?" he asked, holding her close for a moment longer before stepping back.

Emma chuckled, "Just today, Ash. I came straight to my house." She gestured toward the home behind her.

Ashton's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Wait, you're the one who bought this place?"

Emma nodded, her curiosity piqued. "Yes, why?"

"We heard this house was for sale about five months ago," Ashton explained, still processing the news. "I wanted to check it out and negotiate to buy it, but when I spoke to the owner, he said it had already been sold to someone far away. I tried following up a few months later when I noticed it was still empty, but the owner refused, saying it wasn't his anymore. I'm just surprised to learn that the 'someone far away' was you!"

Emma chuckled at the coincidence. "You didn't plan on talking things out with me, did you?"

Ashton laughed, a warm look in his eyes. "Silly," he said, shaking his head.

"Well," Emma began with a smile, "since you've always been my guardian angel, I guess it won't be too much to ask if you can come with me to a furniture shop?"

Ashton laughed again, opening the passenger door of his car for her. "You know I've always got your back, Em."

Emma smiled, grateful for his constant presence. "Thank you, Ash."

On the drive to the furniture shop, Emma found herself stealing glances at Ashton, her thoughts drifting back to the times he had been there for her during her most difficult moments. She remembered how he had shown up unexpectedly, how he had saved her that day at Hidden Brew when she saw Lily and Jake together, and how he had been by her side ever since. Emma could feel his feelings for her even three years ago, but he had respected her boundaries, never once voicing his emotions aloud. Still, he made sure she felt them in his actions and presence.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Ashton gently tapped her nose, bringing her back to the present. "Get back to your thoughts, beautiful. We're here," he said with a smile.

Emma returned his smile as she stepped out of the car, her eyes sparkling as she looked at the furniture shop. "Let's go," Ashton said, and together they walked inside, ready to begin this new chapter in her life.
