The weekend arrived with a clear sky and a gentle breeze, but Emma's mind was anything but calm. Determined and focused, she spent most of her time hunched over her laptop, scrolling through culinary schools in New York, reading reviews, and jotting down notes. She meticulously applied to several schools and scoured job listings that aligned with her passion for food. This was it—she was 100% certain of her next steps.
After a few hours of job hunting, she finally took a break and turned her attention to the upcoming graduation. Emma decided to treat herself; she visited a salon to get her hair and nails done, indulged in a relaxing massage, and for the first time in a long while, allowed herself to unwind. The idea of starting fresh in New York felt both exhilarating and daunting, but the preparations helped her keep her mind steady.
On Sunday afternoon, Emma headed to the beach, her surfboard tucked under her arm. The ocean was calling, and she knew exactly how to answer. As she paddled out and caught her first wave, she felt the familiar rush of adrenaline and freedom. She danced across the water as if it were her last ride, each movement fluid and effortless. The sun-kissed her skin, the wind tousled her hair, and for those few moments, nothing else existed.
When she finally rode the wave back to shore, she was greeted by the sound of applause. Her friends stood on the sand, cheering her on. Jess was the first to run up to her, grinning from ear to ear.
"That was sick, Emma! Your breakdancing on the waves—just like the first time," Jess exclaimed, slinging an arm around her shoulders.
"Yeah, you were so cool. You should consider joining surfing competitions," Ryan added with a nod of approval.
Emma chuckled, shaking her head. "Competitions aren't for me. That was Lily's thing." The mention of Lily brought a pang of sadness. She missed her friend deeply. "You should've seen her. She's 100 times better than me."
"I actually did see you two ride the waves once. You were both pretty cool," Ashton chimed in, admiration shining in his eyes as he looked at Emma.
"You did? When?" Emma asked, surprise coloring her tone. She only recalled surfing with Lily in Rivertown once, before everything went downhill. It was just before they had their fateful talk at Forest Garden, trying to clear the air about the article that had spread in Crystal Town. That day, she had seen Lily with Jake and his parents at a restaurant, and later, she had decided to surf with Lily, promising to pick her up at her hotel afterward for their much-needed conversation.
"You were there that day?" Emma asked, her voice tinged with disbelief as the realization hit her that Ashton had been there, watching, the day she and Lily had their first and last surf together.
Ashton only looked at her, his expression unreadable. The waves crashed softly in the background, filling the silence between them.

As the sun began its descent, casting a warm, golden hue over the beach, Emma sat on the shore, her thoughts a tangle of memories and emotions. The rhythmic sound of the waves provided a comforting background, yet her mind was restless.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't notice Ashton approaching until he spoke from behind her, his voice soft yet steady. "I saw you and Lily at this beach that day. I didn't come up to you both because the situation felt tense. It just didn't seem right to meddle."
Startled, Emma turned to look at him as he sat down beside her. There was a pause, a moment of silence where the only sound was the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore. She waited, sensing that he had more to say.
Ashton continued, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "That night, I don't know what came over me, but something pulled me back here. When I arrived, I saw your car, hastily parked. I waited, hoping you'd come out, but you didn't. I got worried, so I went to check on you. When you rolled down your window, I saw the pain in your eyes."
The memory of that night washed over Emma, vivid and clear. It had been the first time she and Ashton had shared a long, meaningful conversation. It was also the night he had first taken her to Serenity Overlook, marking the beginning of a bond that would see her through some of her hardest times.
She remembered how he had been there for her at Hidden Brew Café when she was about to leave after seeing Lily and Jake together. He had always been there, even on those days when she felt completely lost, offering support without asking for anything in return.
"Thank you so much, Ashton," Emma said, her voice soft but full of sincerity. "You always came at the right time when I needed someone the most. I will surely miss you when I move to New York."
Ashton turned to her, his expression a mix of warmth and sadness. "I'll miss you too, Em. Just promise me one thing—make sure to come back."
Emma smiled, the bittersweetness of the moment settling in her chest. "I will," she promised, knowing that no matter where life took her, a part of her would always be drawn back to this place, to the memories they had made here.
