While shopping for furniture, Emma and Ashton caught up on the time they had missed. As they strolled through the store, Emma asked, "So, how's everyone doing? Jess, Ryan, Becca, and Icy?"
Ashton smiled, happy to share the latest updates. "Jess and Ryan are on the next level now. They're living together, though they don't have any plans to settle down just yet."
Emma grinned. "That's great to hear. And Icy?"
"Icy found her passion in painting," Ashton replied. "She's been really into it, and her work's getting noticed. And Becca? She's now a surf trainer, can you believe that?"
Emma's eyes widened in surprise. "Becca, a surf trainer? That's amazing! I wonder if she's any good."
"She's great," Ashton assured her. "She's even got a few students lined up for lessons."
Emma nodded thoughtfully, her mind drifting back to the last time she had surfed. "I don't know if I can still surf," she admitted quietly. "The last time I was on a board was the day before I left for New York."
Ashton noticed the faraway look in her eyes as she recalled that day. "I remember that day," he said gently. "You were savoring every moment, like it might be your last time on the waves."
Emma nodded, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "I was. I didn't know when—or if—I'd ever come back. And now, here I am."
Ashton glanced at her, a playful smile on his face. "How about we try the waves one of these days?"
Emma's eyes lit up. "That's a great idea," she said, her excitement evident.
Then she turned to him, her expression softening. "So, how have you been, Ashton?"
Ashton met her gaze, his smile fading slightly as he considered her question. "I've been good, Em," he said, his tone sincere. "But if I'm honest, it hasn't been the same without you around. Rivertown felt... different."
Emma looked at him, noticing the subtle vulnerability in his voice. "I'm sorry for cutting off communication with everyone," she said softly. "It wasn't fair to you guys. I just needed to get away, to focus on something else."
Ashton nodded in understanding. "We all figured you needed some space, and I get it. But it doesn't change the fact that we missed you, Em. I missed you."
His words hung in the air, and for a moment, Emma wasn't sure how to respond. She could sense the depth of his feelings, the unspoken emotions that had lingered between them for years.
Emma had always sensed Ashton's feelings through his actions. She knew he respected her boundaries and healing process, yet he remained steadfastly by her side. After a brief pause, she finally said, "I missed you too, Ash. And everyone else as well."
Their eyes locked for a moment, emotions unspoken but understood. The moment lingered, charged with the weight of what had been left unsaid for so long. Then, Emma broke the gaze, glancing around the store as if to ground herself in the present.
The silence between them was comfortable, filled with the quiet acknowledgment of their connection—a connection that had weathered time, distance, and unspoken feelings. It was enough for now, just being there together, letting the past settle while looking ahead to what might come.

As Ashton drove Emma back to her house, the quiet hum of the engine filled the space between them. As they neared her home, Ashton glanced at her and asked, "Do you still have time for coffee at Serenity Overlook?"
Emma's eyes lit up with excitement, a genuine smile spreading across her face. "I've been missing that place for years," she admitted, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "Yes of course," Ashton chuckled.
The drive to Serenity Overlook felt like a journey back in time, filled with memories of the past. As they pulled up, Emma was greeted with an unexpected sight—Ryan, Jess, Becca, and Icy standing near the entrance, waving excitedly.
"Surprise!" they all shouted in unison.
Emma's heart swelled with happiness as she rushed to embrace each of them. "I can't believe you're all here!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with emotion. "I've missed you all so much."
"We've missed you too, Em," Becca said, pulling her into a tight hug. "It hasn't been the same without you."
Jess grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "And look at you, still as beautiful as ever. I never would've guessed that you'd leave us for New York, let alone come back!"
Emma laughed, the sound light and full of warmth. "I couldn't stay away forever. Rivertown has a way of pulling you back, doesn't it?"
As they settled around a cozy table, the conversation flowed effortlessly. Emma found herself teasing Jess and Ryan. "So, you two? Living together now? Who would've thought?"
Ryan chuckled, throwing an arm around Jess. "Yeah, we've come a long way. But it feels right, you know?"
Becca leaned in, a knowing smile on her lips. "You know it was Ashton who called us to surprise you."
Emma glanced at Ashton, who was sitting across from her, and caught him staring at her with an expression that was both soft and intense. There was a warmth in his gaze that made her heart flutter unexpectedly.
Before she could respond, Icy jumped in with a playful nudge. "My brother missed you so much, Emma. Never dated anyone for years."
Jess smirked, adding, "Always looking at the horizon, like he's waiting for something... or someone."
Emma's cheeks flushed slightly as she met Ashton's gaze again, this time unable to hide the smile tugging at her lips. Their eyes locked for a moment longer than necessary, and Emma felt a familiar warmth spread through her.
As the evening wore on, Emma couldn't help but steal glances at Ashton. Sometimes, she caught him looking back at her, his eyes filled with an unspoken understanding that made her feel safe, cherished even. It was a comfort she hadn't realized she'd missed until now.
The conversation, the laughter, the shared memories—it all felt so natural as if no time had passed at all. And as they sat together at Serenity Overlook, surrounded by the friends who had always been there for her, Emma realized that maybe, just maybe, she was ready to open her heart again.
