Two days before the grand opening of her new business, Emma found herself in need of some time alone. The excitement and stress of the upcoming venture had been overwhelming, and she needed a break from it all. She decided to spend the day at the mall, hoping to distract herself with some retail therapy. After hours of shopping and reflecting on the journey that had brought her here, she felt a bit more at ease.
As the evening approached, Emma wandered into a nearby café. The familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee greeted her, providing a small sense of comfort. She ordered a warm drink and settled into a corner, allowing herself to relax. But her moment of peace was short-lived when she suddenly heard a voice she hadn't expected to hear again.
"Emma."
Her heart skipped a beat as she looked up, only to find Jake standing a few feet away. His voice carried a mixture of surprise and nostalgia, as if seeing her again had stirred up the same whirlwind of emotions that she was now feeling.
"Jake," she managed to say, forcing a smile onto her face. "Y-you're here?"
Before Jake could respond, a figure appeared at his side, one that made Emma's heart sink. Atasha. She wrapped her arms around Jake with a familiarity that Emma couldn't ignore.
"Jake, there's—oh, hello. Emma," Atasha said, her smile fading when she saw Emma.
Emma's heart twisted in her chest, the memories of Hawaii flooding back. The painful confrontation, the betrayal, all of it came rushing back as she looked at them together. But she forced herself to stay composed. "Hi," she replied, her voice calm despite the storm inside her.
Atasha seemed to sense the tension and quickly turned to Jake. "Jake, you might want to catch up. I'll wait for you at the hotel."
Jake looked conflicted, glancing between Emma and Atasha. But before he could say anything, Emma cut in, desperate to escape the situation. "No, it's okay. I'm actually in a hurry," she said, her voice wavering as she tried to hold it together. All she wanted was to get out of there, not to be reminded of the pain Jake had caused her. "I—I have to go," she added, turning on her heels and walking away as quickly as she could.
As she reached her car, she fumbled with her keys, her hands shaking. She was about to get in when she heard Jake's voice again. "Emma."
She froze, taking a moment to steady herself before turning around. There he was, standing a few feet away, his expression intense. "It's been a year, huh?"
"Yeah, and the last time I checked, I don't wanna see you," she replied, forcing a smile despite the turmoil inside her. Her voice was laced with bitterness, the old wounds still fresh.
Jake took a step closer, his eyes searching hers. "Emma, I'm sorry. I know I hurt you, and I've regretted it every day since. I was hoping... maybe we could talk?"
Emma hesitated, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. She didn't want to face this, to reopen the wounds that had only just begun to heal. But a part of her also knew that some things needed to be said, that closure was something she had never really gotten. Taking a deep breath, she sighed and smiled gently, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Uhh—okay, but not today, Jake. I'm indeed in a hurry. How about tonight?"
Jake's face lit up with hope, a sight that only made Emma's heart ache more. "Yeah, tonight is great. How about Rivertown Caffeine Central?"
The mention of the café brought a rush of memories to Emma's mind. It was where they had first met, where they had shared so many moments, and where they had ended the first time. The idea of meeting him there was both painful and oddly fitting. "Sure," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
