As Ashton drove home after dropping Emma off, his mind drifted back to their last conversation at Serenity Overlook. He replayed her words in his head, the way she had hesitated when she asked if he was in love with her, and how she admitted that she was scared. He wanted so much to claim her love, to have her all to himself, but he knew he couldn't rush her. Emma wasn't ready, not yet. She had feelings for him—he could see it in her eyes, in the way she held his hand—but those feelings were tangled with confusion and the lingering pain of her past. The thought of that hurt him deeply.

Ashton recalled how he had fallen in love with her the first time he saw her, almost seven years ago. Emma had just moved from Crystal Town to Rivertown, and he had been out with his surf buddies—Jess, Ryan, Becca, and his twin sister, Icy. They were his high school friends, bonded by their shared love for surfing. It was the first weekend of summer, and they had planned to spend it on the beach, catching waves and enjoying the sun.

As they made their way down to the shore, it was Jess who first noticed the girl in the waves. "Wow. That girl surfs gracefully," Jess had remarked, pointing towards Emma.

Ashton and the others followed her gaze, and there she was—Emma, gliding effortlessly over the water, the sun catching the droplets that sprayed around her, making her look almost ethereal. As she descended to the shore, Ashton was captivated. He wasn't paying attention to what his friends were saying anymore; he was too busy staring at her. She had an aura about her, something that made him want to protect her, and her innocent eyes said it all.

That night, back at home, he couldn't stop thinking about Emma. How beautiful she was, how effortlessly she seemed to glide through life just as she did on the waves. He often saw her after that day, but he never had the guts to approach her like his friends and his sister did. Emma quickly became a part of their group, joining them on their weekend surf sessions and growing close to the guys. But Ashton could only watch from a distance, too shy and too unsure of himself to make a move.

Lying in bed that night, Ashton stared at the group photo they had taken earlier that day, the one with Emma smiling brightly in the center. What was wrong with him? Why couldn't he just talk to her like the others did? He felt a mix of frustration and longing, emotions that only grew stronger with time.

—----------------------------------------------------

It didn't take long for Emma to become a close member of Ashton's group of friends. Her warmth and genuine nature made her easy to connect with, and soon enough, she was surfing alongside them every weekend, sharing laughs and stories. Ashton, though still a bit distant, found himself increasingly captivated by her. He relished the moments when he could watch her surf, her graceful movements on the waves mirroring the joy she exuded. He would listen intently to her when she talked, savoring the sound of her voice, and her smiles—those radiant smiles—were what he lived for.

But everything changed when Emma introduced Jake to the group. Ashton already knew that Emma and Jake had come from Crystal Town, but seeing them together stirred something uncomfortable within him. He noticed how Emma's eyes lit up around Jake, and how Jake seemed just as taken with her.

Ashton's heart sank as he watched them grow closer. His feelings for Emma only deepened, but he withdrew even more, keeping his distance and watching from afar. He didn't want to get in the way, didn't want to complicate things for her. Yet, he couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy every time he saw them together.

The breaking point came when Emma caught Jake and Shaneka in Jake's room. Ashton was furious on her behalf, but he kept his anger to himself, unable to voice it. It was agonizing to see her hurt, but all he could do was stand by and hope she would be okay. When Emma disappeared from Rivertown for a month, Ashton missed her more than he could express. The beach felt emptier without her, the group's laughter less genuine.

When Emma finally returned, Ashton's heart soared—only for that happiness to be crushed when she and Jake announced they were dating. It felt like a punch to the gut, but he forced himself to smile, to be supportive, even as his heart broke. The only person who knew the truth was Icy, his twin sister.

Later that evening, after Emma and Jake had shared the news, Ashton retreated to his room, trying to lose himself in a video game. The colorful graphics and fast-paced action did little to distract him from the ache in his chest. Icy, ever perceptive, soon entered his room, a concerned look on her face.

"What do you think about Emma and Jake?" she asked, her tone casual, but her eyes searching.

Ashton kept his eyes on the screen, forcing a nonchalant tone. "They look good together," he replied, his voice betraying none of the turmoil he felt inside.

Icy wasn't convinced. She sat on the edge of his bed, watching him closely. "Are you okay with it? Letting her go without ever telling her how you feel?"

Ashton paused the game, finally meeting his sister's gaze. "She never noticed me, Ice. We only ever talked when we were with the group. It would be weird to just come out and tell her how I feel, and... I am happy that she's happy," he said, though even as the words left his mouth, they felt hollow.

Icy sighed, shaking her head with a small, sad smile. "Oh, brother, how classical of you," she said, her voice laced with affection and frustration. "You can never win your girl when you're that far from her."

She left the room, leaving Ashton alone with his thoughts. Her words echoed in his mind, mingling with the regret and longing that had become his constant companions. He knew Icy was right, but what could he do now? Emma was with Jake, and she seemed happy. He had missed his chance, and now he could only watch from the sidelines, his feelings for her remaining unspoken, locked away in the depths of his heart.
