As Emma headed home, she couldn't shake off the image of Atasha's eyes—there was something in them, a mix of pain and longing that made her uneasy. She knew something was off, but she chose to shrug it off, hoping that Jake wouldn't do anything that could hurt her.

The next day, Emma escorted Jake and his colleagues to the airport. Sheryl and Atasha were nowhere to be seen, which only added to the curiosity brewing in her mind. She was lost in thought when Jake suddenly pulled her into a hug.

"I'll miss you," he whispered into her ear, holding her close. "I'll try to come back twice a month."

Emma smiled, trying to keep her worries at bay. "I'll try to visit Hawaii sometime too."

"Yeah, do let me know once you do," Jake replied before giving her a final kiss, lingering just a bit longer before he pulled away and took his leave.

In the weeks that followed, Emma and Jake never missed a day of communication. Even when it was just a text, they made sure to keep each other updated. But Emma couldn't ignore the subtle changes in Jake—there were days when his messages seemed distant as if his mind was elsewhere.

One evening, while they were on a video call, Emma noticed the weariness in Jake's eyes.

"Are you okay, Jake? You seem tired," she asked, her voice filled with concern.

Jake forced a smile. "Yeah, just a lot going on with work. Nothing to worry about."

Emma bit her lip, sensing something deeper. "You know you can talk to me, right? If something's bothering you..."

Jake sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's just... I've been feeling a bit off lately. Nothing specific, just... I don't know."

Emma frowned, her worry deepening. "Is it work? Or something else?"

Jake hesitated for a moment before replying, "Work, mostly. I've been under a lot of pressure, trying to balance everything. But I'll be fine, Em, really."

Emma nodded, though she wasn't entirely convinced. "Okay, but if you need to talk, I'm here."

"Thanks, Em," Jake said softly, but his voice lacked the usual warmth. "I'll make it up to you when I'm back, I promise."

Emma tried to push away the nagging doubts, but they kept creeping back. A few days later, Jake missed their usual call, and instead, she received a text the next morning.

"Sorry about last night, Em. Got caught up with work and passed out. I'll make it up to you tonight."

Emma replied, "It's okay, just take care of yourself."

That evening, they talked, but Emma noticed that Jake seemed distracted, his responses delayed as if he wasn't fully present.

"Jake, are you sure everything's okay?" Emma asked again, her voice tinged with concern.

Jake sighed deeply. "Yeah... I just feel like I'm not fully here, you know? Like I'm drifting."

Emma's heart sank. "Do you think it's because of the distance? Us being apart?"

Jake was silent for a moment before he answered, "Maybe... I don't know. I just feel... disconnected."

Emma tried to keep her voice steady. "We'll get through this, Jake. We just need to stay strong, okay?"

"Yeah," Jake said, but his voice was distant. "We'll get through it."

Emma ended the call feeling more uneasy than ever. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was slipping away, that Jake was slipping away. But she chose to hold on, hoping that things would get better once they were together again.
