Back to Present Time (2 years after New York)

The past few days had been a whirlwind of activity as she meticulously selected furniture, filled her space with personal touches, and even purchased a car. The house slowly began to feel like a home, a place where she could build new memories.

To celebrate this new chapter, Emma invited her closest friends over for a BBQ party. Laughter and chatter filled the air as they gathered in her backyard, the scent of grilled food mingling with the warm evening breeze. As the night deepened, the glow of the lanterns cast a soft, welcoming light over the scene.

Emma found herself at the grill alongside Ashton, who had been a constant presence since her return. As the flames crackled beneath the sizzling steaks, they fell into an easy rhythm, working together in comfortable silence.

"I've been thinking about visiting my parents soon," Emma said, breaking the quiet. "I haven't seen them since I got back from New York. It's... been a while."

Ashton glanced at her, his expression softening. "That sounds like a good idea. I'm sure they'll be happy to see you. Sometimes, taking that first step is the hardest part, but it's worth it."

Emma nodded, appreciating his encouragement. There was a calmness in Ashton's voice that had always made her feel at ease, a steady presence that she had come to rely on.

Curious about him, she turned to him with a teasing smile. "What about you? You haven't shared much with me since I bumped into you. Are you seeing anyone these days?"

Ashton chuckled, a lightness in his tone that matched the twinkle in his eyes. "I've been keeping busy with our family business, trying to stay out of trouble," he said playfully. "But if I'm being honest, I've been waiting for someone."

Emma flashed him a knowing smile, a playful glint in her eyes. "Oh? And who might that be?"

Before Ashton could respond, Jess and Ryan emerged from the house, their cheerful voices interrupting the moment. "Emma, your place is incredible!" Jess exclaimed, admiring the house. "And Icy's cookies are amazing, as always."

Emma chuckled, grateful for the compliment. "Thanks, Jess. I'll get the steaks ready, so you two can relax." She turned back to the grill, but not before catching Ashton's gaze lingering on her, his smile soft yet serious.

As she tended to the food, Emma couldn't help but feel a warmth spreading through her chest. Despite the years and the distance, there was something about being here, with her friends and Ashton, that made everything feel right. The past had its hold on her, but tonight, surrounded by those who mattered most, Emma realized she was finally home.

The drive to her parents' house felt surreal to Emma, like stepping back into a time she had almost forgotten. The familiar roads, the trees lining the streets, and even the scent of the air brought back a flood of memories. It had been so long since she'd been here, and though she missed her parents, she was unsure how to bridge the gap that time and distance had created.

As she pulled up to the house, her childhood home stood before her, unchanged yet different in the way only time can make something feel. Emma sat in the car for a moment, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. What would she say? How would they react? She wasn't sure, but she knew it was time.

Finally, she gathered the courage to get out of the car and walk up to the front door. Standing there, she hesitated, her heart pounding in her chest. Then, with a deep sigh, she knocked.

The door swung open, revealing her mother, who stood frozen in shock for a moment before her face broke into a wide, tearful smile. "Emma!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with a mix of surprise and joy. Without another word, she called out, "Honey, our daughter's home!"

Before Emma could fully process it, her mother had wrapped her in a tight embrace, holding her as if she never wanted to let go. Emma closed her eyes, sinking into the warmth of her mother's arms, feeling the weight of the past two years lift slightly.

Her father appeared in the doorway, his eyes widening as he saw Emma. "Em," he said softly, his voice thick with emotion.

Emma pulled away from her mother just enough to see her father, and in an instant, she ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck. "Dad," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I missed you so much."

He held her just as tightly, his hands gently patting her back. "We missed you too, sweetheart. Every day."

Emma pulled back slightly, looking up at him with tears in her eyes. "I'm so sorry, Dad, for not contacting you as soon as I arrived, for cutting off communication when I was in New York... I just didn't know how to... I didn't know what to say."

Before she could continue, her father pulled her back into a hug, his voice breaking with emotion as he said, "How I missed you, Em. None of that matters now. What matters is that you're here, and you're safe."

Emma's tears flowed freely now, the relief and love in her father's words overwhelming her. She clung to him, feeling the years of distance melt away in that single moment.

Her mother joined them, wrapping her arms around both of them. "We're just so happy to have you home," she whispered.

For a long time, they stood there in the doorway, holding each other, letting the unspoken apologies and forgiveness pass between them in silence. At that moment, Emma knew that no matter how far she had gone or how much time had passed, this would always be home.
