Ghosts of Yesterday

Months had passed, and the time for graduation loomed on the horizon. The excitement that once filled the air was now tinged with a sense of finality. Emma had kept herself busy, immersing herself in her studies, trying to piece her life back together after everything that had happened. But no matter how much time had passed, there was still a part of her that couldn't quite let go of the past.

The convention was buzzing with activity. Attendees from all over the region gathered in the grand ballroom of the hotel, networking, attending seminars, and discussing the latest industry trends. Emma had almost forgotten about the world outside as she moved from one presentation to another, absorbing as much knowledge as she could. It was a welcome distraction, one she desperately needed.

But as fate would have it, the past had a way of catching up when least expected.

Emma was making her way to the exit when she nearly collided with a tall, imposing figure. She looked up, and her breath caught in her throat. Mr. Hansley, Jake's father, stood before her. His sharp features softened slightly as recognition dawned in his eyes.

"Emma," he said, his voice tinged with a mix of surprise and something she couldn't quite place.

"Mr. Hansley," she replied, steadying herself. The initial shock faded, replaced by a calm resolve. "I hope you've found peace now that Jake and I are no longer together."

Mr. Hansley's expression hardened, but there was a flicker of pain in his eyes. "Peace? Do you think I've found peace, Emma? We lost Jake the same time you two broke up, and the arranged marriage ended. He's been missing in action, and I never imagined he would cut all ties with his family. Never."

Emma felt a pang of guilt, but she steeled herself. "It's what you wanted, isn't it? After all, you spent so much time trying to control the lives of others. Maybe now you see what that leads to."

Mr. Hansley stared at her, the weight of her words sinking in. For a moment, the stern, unyielding man she had known seemed to crack. Sadness washed over his features, and he opened his mouth as if to say something, but no words came out.

Before the silence could stretch any further, Ashton appeared beside Emma. His presence was a grounding force, and she felt a sense of relief wash over her. Mr. Hansley's gaze shifted to Ashton, suspicion narrowing his eyes.

"And how are you involved with the Parkers, Mr...?"

Ashton met Mr. Hansley's gaze without flinching. "My family doesn't involve themselves in our decisions—who we choose or how we live our lives."

He then turned to Emma, gently taking her hand. "Let's go, Jess is waiting."

Emma nodded, grateful for the escape. As they walked away, she glanced back at Mr. Hansley. "Mr. Hansley," she said, her voice soft but firm, "I hope that you can let go of what happened in the past, including your hatred for my family—especially my dad."

Mr. Hansley remained silent, his face unreadable. But in his eyes, Emma saw a flicker of something—regret, perhaps, or a realization too late to change anything. As they left the convention behind, Ashton squeezed her hand gently.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his concern evident.

Emma took a deep breath and nodded. "Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks."

They walked in silence for a while, the weight of the encounter still heavy in the air. But as they left the hotel and stepped into the cool evening, Emma felt a sense of closure. The past was still there, but it no longer held the same power over her. She had faced it, and now, she was ready to move forward.

As the night grew darker, Emma and her friends decided to spend the evening at the beach. The gentle sound of waves crashing against the shore set a serene backdrop as they gathered around a crackling campfire. The flames danced in the cool night air, casting warm glows on their faces.

Jess playfully shoved Ryan, pretending to be offended by something he'd said. "You always have to get the last word, don't you?" she quipped, rolling her eyes in mock annoyance.

Ryan smirked, not missing a beat. "Only because I'm always right."

Icy, ever the observant one, grinned and teased, "You two bicker like an old married couple. You're going to end up together."

Jess shot her a glare, though there was a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "For the love of God, I can't even imagine that!"

The group erupted in laughter, the sound blending with the soothing hum of the ocean. Becca, who had been quietly poking at the fire with a stick, spoke up. "I've been thinking about the future, too. I want to be a surf trainer. It just feels right, you know?"

Icy turned to Emma, curiosity in her eyes. "What about you, Emma? What's the plan?"

Emma hesitated for a moment before speaking, a small smile forming on her lips. "Well, apart from surfing, I've discovered a new hobby—cooking. I've been thinking of taking some cooking classes after graduation. Maybe even starting a business that combines food and surfing somehow."

Becca's eyes lit up. "That sounds awesome! My trainees can hang out at your restaurant after hitting the waves."

The idea was met with enthusiastic nods and excited chatter as they all imagined the possibilities. Amid the conversation, Emma shared another thought that had been on her mind. "I've also been considering moving to a big city like LA or New York. There are more opportunities there, and I think it could be good for me."

Jess's expression shifted slightly. "So, you're planning on leaving Rivertown?"

Emma shrugged, her gaze drifting to the flickering flames. "It's not decided yet. I haven't even talked to my family about it. Honestly, I've been avoiding them. There's a lot I need to figure out."

She fell silent, her thoughts momentarily consumed by the unresolved tension between her and her family. The weight of her indecision pressed down on her, but she quickly changed the subject, not wanting to linger on the matter.

"What about you, Ashton?" Emma asked, turning to him. "Any big plans?"

Ashton leaned back, gazing up at the starry sky. "I might take over the family business. Icy's not interested, so it makes sense."

Icy chimed in, nodding. "Our dad's always said he'll support whatever we choose to do. But Ashton, won't you miss Emma if she leaves?"

Ryan joined in the teasing, smirking at Ashton. "Yeah, what's your plan for that?"

Ashton didn't hesitate. "Of course, I'll miss her. We all will."

Emma's gaze lingered on Ashton, feeling a mix of emotions. She had noticed how much more attentive he'd been lately, how his presence had become a comforting constant in her life. Yet, a pang of guilt tugged at her heart. She couldn't deny the bond she and Ashton had formed, but the shadow of her past with Jake still loomed over her, holding her back.

The thought of Jake and how their relationship had ended hit her like a wave crashing onto the shore. The pain resurfaced, threatening to spill over into the night. She blinked back the tears, trying to mask her sorrow, but Ashton's worried eyes found hers. He seemed to sense her inner turmoil, his gaze filled with silent concern.

Emma quickly looked away, focusing on the warmth of the fire, the laughter of her friends, and the comforting sounds of the sea. But deep down, she knew that no matter how far she ran or how many new beginnings she sought, the past would always be a part of her, shaping the person she was becoming.
