Ashton had been watching Emma more closely since the announcement of Jake and Lily's engagement. He could see the pain she was trying so hard to hide behind her smile, and it tore him apart. Everyone knew how wrong this situation was—Jake was supposed to be with Emma, not Lily. Yet here they were, tangled in a mess created by forces beyond their control.

It was the day before the engagement, and Ashton found himself driving toward Hidden Brew Café without even thinking about it. It was as if something—maybe intuition or a force beyond his understanding—had guided him there. When he pulled into the parking lot, he saw Emma standing outside, lost in her thoughts.

She didn't notice him at first, her gaze distant, probably replaying memories in her mind. Ashton's heart ached for her. He knew she was hurting more than she let on. When she finally turned around and saw him, the surprise in her eyes mirrored his own. But before he could say anything, he noticed her glance toward the café's window. Following her gaze, he saw them—Jake and Lily—sitting together, seemingly comfortable in each other's company. The sight made his stomach twist.

He was about to ask, "Is that—" but Emma cut him off, her hand grabbing his arm with an urgency he hadn't seen in her before. Without another word, she led him toward her car, her grip tight as if she was holding onto him for stability.

As they reached her car, Emma handed him the keys. "I don't know what good spirit made you appear when I needed it, but please, just drive me out of here," she said, her voice barely masking the desperation she felt. Ashton didn't hesitate. He slid into the driver's seat, his concern for her overriding everything else. This was Emma—he would do anything for her.

She climbed into the passenger seat, her hands trembling as she fumbled to dial Lily's number. Ashton could hear the pain in her voice as she spoke, "Lils, I'm sorry, I can't make it to the café... And I know it's too late to refuse, but I'm refusing to be your maid of honor tomorrow. I just can't do it."

Ashton glanced at her, seeing the tears she was fighting to hold back. The strength it must have taken for her to say those words—Ashton couldn't imagine. He wished he could take away her pain, but all he could do was be there, be the one who drove her away from it all, even if just for a little while.

When her phone screen flashed with Jake's name, Ashton saw the conflict in her eyes. She sighed heavily before answering. "Jake, I can't see you both right now. Meet me tonight. We need to talk." The tension in the car was palpable as Jake tried to speak, but Emma wasn't having it. She cut him off, her voice firm yet brittle, "Please, just meet me tonight." Then she hung up, turning off her phone before leaning back in her seat, trying to steady her breath.

Ashton's heart ached for her. Seeing Emma like this, so fragile yet so strong, was almost too much for him to bear. He reached over, squeezing her hand gently, trying to offer some comfort, some reassurance. "Thank you, Ashton," she said softly, her voice full of gratitude and something else—something deeper. "I don't know if God sends you to save me from drowning every time, but it really means a lot to me. Thank you."

Her words touched him more than she could ever know. "I'm always here for you, Em. Always," he replied, his voice laced with an intensity that surprised even him. But it was true—he would always be there for her, no matter what.

Emma looked at him, her eyes searching his face as if trying to understand something, but all she managed was a small, tired smile. "Can you take me somewhere away from this place?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ashton nodded, his heart swelling with a mix of emotions he couldn't quite name. "Of course," he said, starting the car and pulling out of the parking lot.

As they drove away from Hidden Brew, the tension slowly began to ease, replaced by a quiet understanding between them. Ashton didn't know what would happen next, but he knew one thing for sure—he would stand by Emma's side, no matter how hard things got. She wasn't facing this alone. Not as long as he was around.

Ashton drove through the quiet streets, the fading light of dusk casting long shadows. Emma remained silent, her gaze fixed out the window, but Ashton could feel the turmoil radiating from her. This wasn't just about getting away from Jake and Lily; it was about giving her a place where she could finally let go of everything she'd been bottling up inside.

When they arrived at the hill, Ashton parked the car and got out, walking around to open Emma's door. She looked up at him with tear-brimmed eyes, but she didn't resist as he gently took her hand and led her up the familiar path. The view from the top was as breathtaking as ever, with the city lights twinkling in the distance and the sky above them slowly darkening into night.

Emma stood at the edge, staring out at the horizon, her expression distant and weary. "Why here?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Ashton stepped closer, his heart aching for her. "Because this is where you can be yourself," he said softly. "You don't have to pretend here, Emma. You can let it all out."

Her shoulders trembled as she tried to hold back the tears, but Ashton knew she was close to breaking. He stayed by her side, ready to catch her when she fell.

And then she did. The tears began to flow freely, and Emma sank to her knees, her sobs echoing in the quiet night. Ashton immediately knelt beside her, wrapping his arms around her and holding her tightly. He could feel her pain as if it were his own, each sob tearing through him.

"I'm so tired, Ashton," she choked out between sobs, her voice raw with emotion. "I'm so tired of pretending everything is okay."

Ashton's heart broke for her. "I know," he whispered, his hand gently rubbing her back. "You don't have to pretend anymore. Not here. Just let it all out."

Emma clung to him as she cried, her tears soaking into his shirt, but Ashton didn't care. All that mattered was being there for her, offering her the comfort she so desperately needed. He wished he could take away her pain, but all he could do was hold her and let her know she wasn't alone.

Time seemed to slow as they stayed there, the world around them fading into the background. Ashton didn't say anything more; he just held her, his arms a protective barrier against the storm of emotions swirling within her. Eventually, the sobs began to subside, and Emma's breathing steadied.

When she finally looked up at him, her eyes were red and swollen, but there was a quiet resolve in them. "I'm going to end things with Jake tonight," she said, her voice steady but tinged with sadness. "It's the only way."

Ashton nodded, understanding the weight of her decision. "Whatever you decide, Emma, I'm here for you. Always."

She offered him a small, grateful smile, her hand reaching up to gently touch his cheek. "Thank you, Ashton. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'll never have to find out," he replied, his voice soft but firm.

They stayed on the hill a little longer, the night wrapping around them like a comforting blanket. The first stars began to appear in the sky, casting a gentle light over the hilltop. Ashton knew that this moment would be etched in his memory forever—a moment of vulnerability, of quiet strength, and of the unspoken bond between them.

As he looked at Emma, he realized just how much he cared for her, how deeply he wanted to protect her from the pain she was going through. And in that moment, he vowed to himself that he would always be there for her, no matter what the future held.
