Emma readied herself for bed, feeling a mix of excitement and exhaustion. She had spent the day ensuring that the essential furniture would be delivered the next morning, deciding to spend her first night in her new home. The bed was made, and the space was beginning to feel like hers.
As she climbed into bed, she checked her phone one last time, savoring the comfort of the mattress beneath her. She smiled at the goodnight messages from her friends and paused on the last message from Ashton: See you tomorrow.
As Emma lay back, her thoughts drifted to a painful yet pivotal memory from her past with Ashton.
—--------------------------------
3 years ago (At Hidden Brew Cafe)
Emma stood up abruptly, her emotions welling up inside her. She headed to Hidden Brew Café, hoping to find some solace. But as she entered, she froze. In the corner, Jake and Lily sat across from each other, talking and smiling. A pang of pain hit her as she watched them, her heart aching at the sight of them together.
She turned to leave, not wanting to interrupt, when she noticed Ashton standing nearby, watching her.
"Is that—" Ashton started to ask, but Emma quickly grabbed his arm, leading him toward the car park.
As they reached her car, Emma handed Ashton the keys. "I don't know what good spirit made you appear when I needed it, but please, just drive me out of here," she said, her voice tinged with desperation.
Ashton, surprised but concerned, nodded and got into the driver's seat. Emma climbed into the passenger seat, her hands trembling as she dialed Lily's number.
"Lils, I'm sorry, I can't make it to the café," Emma said, her voice breaking slightly. "And I know it's too late to refuse, but I'm refusing to be your maid of honor tomorrow. I just can't do it."
As Emma ended the call, her phone screen flashed with Jake's name. She stared at it for a moment, then sighed and answered. "Jake, I can't see you both right now. Meet me tonight. We need to talk."
Jake's concerned voice came through the phone, but Emma cut him off. "Please, just meet me tonight." She hung up and immediately turned off her phone, leaning back in her seat, and trying to steady her breathing.
She looked over at Ashton, who was watching her with a mix of concern and understanding. "Thank you, Ashton," she said softly. "I don't know if God sends you to save me from drowning every time, but it means a lot to me. Thank you."
Ashton's eyes softened, and he reached over to squeeze her hand gently. "I'm always here for you, Em. Always."
Emma stared at him, a little confused by the intensity in his voice, but she managed a small smile. "Can you take me somewhere away from this place?"
Ashton smiled back at her and nodded. "Of course," he said, turning the key in the ignition and pulling out of the parking lot.
Ashton drove Emma to the hill, a quiet, secluded spot they both knew well. It was the same hill where Emma had once found solace, crying out her pain after discovering her father's affair with Jake's mother. The drive was soothing, with the hum of the engine and the soft light of the evening fading away. When they arrived, Ashton parked the car and walked with Emma to the top of the hill, where the view of the city below was bathed in the soft glow of twilight.
Emma looked out at the horizon, taking in the expansive view. It was a beautiful, serene place, starkly contrasting the turmoil inside her. She turned to Ashton, her eyes filled with confusion and hurt.
"Why here?" she asked softly, her voice trembling slightly.
Ashton, his concern evident, responded gently, "Because this is the place where you can cry your heart out. You can let it all out here, Emma. I'm not going to stop you. I know things have been incredibly hard for you. You shouldn't have to hold back your tears."
Emma's heart ached at his words. The dam broke, and tears began to flow uncontrollably. She sank to her knees, her sobs echoing through the quiet hilltop. Her emotions poured out as she struggled to speak through the pain. She realized that everything she and Jake had built was crumbling, and it was too late to salvage what they once had. The pain was overwhelming, and she felt lost as if she had never truly been found.
The sense of betrayal and insecurity washed over her. She loved her best friend Lily, but the feeling of being replaced in Jake's life by Lily was unbearable. The arranged marriage, orchestrated by Jake's father using his influence over Lily's family business, was the ultimate betrayal. Emma couldn't bear the thought of losing Jake, yet she knew deep down that their relationship had already been lost.
She wished for an escape with Jake, a chance to start anew, but where could they go? How could they hide from the world and its expectations? The reality of their situation and the impossible choices before her made her feel trapped.
Ashton approached her and sat beside her, wrapping his arms around her in a comforting embrace. He held her tightly, offering a sense of security and understanding.
"I'm going to end things with Jake tonight," Emma said through her tears, her voice barely audible. She wiped her face with the back of her hand. "I don't know how or if I can, but it's for the best—for all of us."
She cried again, reflecting on the moments she and Jake had shared before everything became so complicated. It felt like she spent hours on that hill, crying and grieving, while Ashton remained by her side, a constant pillar of support.
When Emma's sobs subsided, she looked up at Ashton, her eyes red and swollen. "Thank you for being here for me," she said quietly. "If you hadn't shown up at Hidden Brew, I don't know where my pain would have taken me."
Ashton gently wiped her tears away with his thumb, his gaze filled with warmth and reassurance. "Emma, you're one of the strongest women I know. Handling all of this by yourself proves that. I'm always here for you, as are the rest of our friends. Whatever you decide tonight, we'll be here for you."
He hugged her again, holding her close as the sky darkened. The stars began to appear, twinkling softly above, mirroring the calm that was slowly returning to Emma's heart. At that moment, she felt a glimmer of hope, knowing that she wasn't alone in facing the challenges ahead.
