Chapter 7

12 years prior...

My mother was finally out of labour. Sweat covered her body as she lay down on the bed as my father held her. My mom held the baby in her arms as it played with my dad's finger. "What should we name her, Will?" My mom asked, Will was short for Willadsen.

"Lorelay, little Lorelay." My dad smiles.

"It think it's a beautiful name," my mom said, "what do you think, girls?" She asked me and my two other sisters, who were scattered on her bed.

"Little Lorelay Walker, I love it." I said. I was only 6 at the time. I was the only one who could leave the room.

My younger sister, Amelie, was a year younger than me. She was slightly darker than me, more of an olive shade like my dad, and she had thick curly hair and dark eyes.

My second sister, Istena, she was very thin and lean. Her hair was thick but completely straight. Her skin colour was a pale white.

And little Lorelay, I never got the chance to see her grow. Although the four of us looked entirely different, we all shared our eyes. Our mother's eyes. Large sharp almond eyes.

Our mother said our ancestors were from the Middle East and Europe and that one day, we'd go down to the ground to meet them. I knew that was never true.

We were lucky. My dad was a high-ranking official. He worked with the council and was also an engineering pilot. He was a very precious member of staff. The people of the Ark loved him. He was the most lenient of the council members.

This meant that we were never put through suprise inspections, and our room was pretty big. My dad always had this crazy backup plan for if anything ever backfired. I'd never thought he'd actually have to go through with it.

I sat with my back against the wall, twirling my gold necklace with the initials W.W. on them when I heard the sound of rain, but there was no rain. I looked up to see a meteor shower—

The flares. They didn't work. "All I know is that my sister is out there, and I'm going to find her." I heard it was Blake. Octavias missing? I thought to myself. People were volunteering to join the search party. I would've volunteered if the stupidest person in the camp wasn't leading the search party.

I decided to look for the person who knew these woods better than I did. I went to the cliffs edge, I had forgotten the exact location of the cave I met him in, "Eliyas." I called, walking along the cliffs edge, hoping he'd show up.

"Eli-" I was grabbed and spun in the air, shrieking. He put me down, and I looked into his bright blue eyes lightly shoving his arm, "Stop, you scared me." I complained as he laughed.

"Are you here for your lessons?" He asked.

"No, I need your help, my friend is missing." I told him.

"I couldn't help you if I wanted to. Your people are all over this part of the forest. The only way I would be able to do it is if I killed someone, and I'm sure neither of us wants that." I looked at him, pleading.

"But don't worry, I'm sure she's fine. Our people like to keep track of how many of you guys pass. It helps them stay prepared. They would've announced it by now." He comforted, "Either way, there are approximately 30 of your people out there looking for her, I'm sure they'll be fine with one less."

I look towards him before giving in. "Okay, fine." I said, "Where are we going to go so that they won't see us?"

"I know the perfect place." He smiled.
