maeve pov.
a day before the
abu dhabi grand prix

'shred it. or i'm taking you to court for it.'

ashton was stunned and ronan looked proud over that zoom call.

'that's not how it would work' my mother said and i smiled.

'it's a non consensual agreement. ofcourse, that's exactly how it'll work. i was almost talked into marrying this guy because he was in it for the money and i'm not. get me a new copy or just get rid of it. i'm not signing that while his signature is still there. the primary signature is supposed to be mine' i tell her and my dad sighs.

'okay, and what about your share? what is your decision, if not ashton, then who?' he asked and i looked at the screen to see ronan nodding.

'i'm signing them to niamh. she's legally bound to me, family. i'll let her decide what she'd do with it once she's old enough but right now, it's not going to a man as my partner. and i'll claim my beneficiary. put it to good use.'

involving niamh wasn't the best idea, but we had time to figure it out that way. in the worst case scenario, she could sell back the shares to ronan or dad, whoever is at the head of the firm then. since she's a minor, they'll still be under me and ashton wouldn't be in the picture anymore.

it called for a partnership agreement, but never specified a martial status, it was implied but not stated on paper. that's my loophole.

29 million in the bank with 4 properties across europe wasn't something i'd thought i'd own by the end of the year. i was going to listen ronan on this one, start up my work from home properties then build new ones. thoughts of being a hotelier gave a lot more satisfaction that i thought it would.

it was my grandma's promise. ever since i was kid, we spoke about it often and i couldn't believe her dying wish was for me to live my childhood dream that i'd given up on so many years ago.

there were so many technicalities, the will was uncomplicated but the contracts, is where the problem began.

one was to split share ownership of the law firm that was under my grandpa 34 shares split amongst 6 people. rory not included. ronan and leigh, maire and lawrence and a partner i'd split my share with. i simply, picked niamh. ronan already had a greater holding, since maire and i didn't have any even before the contract so i couldn't add them on the list. rory, was specifically given grandma's shares so he was out of the list as well.

and finally, the decision my dad asked me to make. i'll rip off the bandaid when i see him out of the office next time, after new years. because, it wasn't easy after all and i couldn't do it alone. that contract could be the make or break for me. .

"hey, how was it?" i asked niamh as she got into the car. "great honestly, history isn't that hard honestly if you know the words. one more exam to go" she said, doing a little dance in the passenger seat and i smiled.

"wait, why are you smiling so much? i mean its not bad but you'd usually have follow up questions" niamh said as i drove us back, taking a detour to pick up some clementines from the farmer's market. it had been a good day and deserved some celebration.
