Last time, our heroes met Riley's second childhood friend, Sakura, who is the youngest of five sisters. Together with her sister's help, our heroes managed to rescue Sakura's Eevee. But now, the day turns to Riley's match at the Ecruteak Gym where he prepares to battle Morty and his powerful Ghost Types.

It was still early in the morning, and our heroes were at Pokémon after a restful night.

Marina: [Sighs] I slept great.

Jimmy: Looks like Riley's gonna battle Morty today. I hope he can handle it. That Morty is tough.

Marina: Yeah. The way he uses his Pokémon's status moves is something.

Karen: Come to think of it, where is Riley? I haven't seen him since breakfast.

Riley: Keep up, guys!

The three look to where they heard Riley and see that the young man was currently running laps with his Pokémon close behind.

Riley: Sound off!

Sneasel: Sneasel! (One)

Cyndaquil: Cynda! (Two)

Bellossom: Bello! (Three)

Chinchou: Chou! (Four)

Espeon: Es! (Five)

Riley: [Panting] Huh? Riley looked back and spotted one of his Pokémon falling behind.

Sudowoodo: Su...do....woo....do.....The Rock type was running out of steam and soon fell to its knees.

Riley: You okay, Sudowoodo?

Sudowoodo: Sudo....

Marina: Riley.

Riley: Hey, guys.

Jimmy: Doing some last minute training?

Riley: That's right. Getting Sudowoodo ready for our battle against Morty.

Jimmy & Marina: Huh?

Karen: You're using Sudowoodo?

Jimmy: Is that a good idea? You just caught Sudowoodo.

Marina: Morty's Ghost Pokémon are pretty strong. He's not the kind of person you should test a new Pokémon on.

Riley: No need to worry. I got a plan.

Sakura: Riley! Just then, Sakura and her sisters showed up.

And with that, our heroes head toward the Ecruteak Gym. There, Gengar was facing down multiple Gastly.

Morty: Gengar, use Confuse Ray!

Gengar uses the attack and hits all the Gastly at once which amazes all the students.

Morty: Ghost Pokemon may not have the pure physical strength of some other Pokémon types, but by using their abilities wisely, the opponents become confused and fearful, and that can be a much more powerful and useful weapon than brute force. For example, that last Confuse Ray could...

???: Uh, excuse me, sir. A trainer has arrived to challenge you.

Riley: Hey there, Morty.

Morty: Riley. Good to see you. I've been looking forward to our battle.

Riley: That makes two of us. By the way, Sakura and her sisters came by to watch the match. Is that okay?

Morty: Of course. I don't see the harm in a few more spectators. Class, this is Riley from Newbark Town and he'll be challenging our gym today. I'd like to allow them to observe our battles, boys.
