During PE class, Crystal Yeo excused herself from the class. Our new teacher* noticed and asked us to fetch her back.
YR went first. She asked Crystal Yeo to head back for class, but she continuously shook her head. Eventually, YR walked away and shook her head in exasperation. Knowing what that meant, I went to Crystal Yeo's side and successfully managed to convince her to participate. She finally walked back onto the court with my convincing.
-I asked my classmate Charlotte, "How is it possible for me to get Crystal Yeo on the field when no one can?"
"Maybe she trusts you more than anyone," Charlotte replied. "You're the only one that she makes an effort to talk to." I flushed; I actually doubt that was a good thing. Sure, it was a comfort to my past filled with struggling to survive and never getting through my school years without a single visit to the Counselor, a damn lot of help or having friends assigned to me. But with that put aside, I doubt if that is what matters to me now.
Her friend Cleo suddenly blurts at the side, "I hope you fail Chinese! Then you can end up with me during Chinese**, hahaha!"
That was pretty much a lie, right? I forced myself to learn sarcasm because sarcasm would give me an edge above the rest. But that aside, I heard another disturbing comment: "Yea, I hope so too!" Sarcastic as this may sound, it disturbed me enough to ask and that's when I learnt the horrifying truth: If I didn't do "well enough" for Chinese, I'd be forced to demote.
Ethan was there and even though I've more or less put everything with him behind me, going to the (second) lowest Stream 1 Chinese class still felt like a punch in the gut. I knew I didn't put in enough work last year to end up in this fix with my toxic teacher that only sees me as an asset to help the other Crystal. Yet, if I can get demoted, shouldn't I challenge the second language department to see if I can get promoted instead? Living in flight or fight for Chinese would do me more harm than good anyway.
It's final; I'm going to do well enough to kick myself out of that class and go to where I belong: the top class.
*- this would be explored in a filler to give priority to the present day arc
**- 3 Peace spilts up and takes Chinese in different classes based on their ability in Chinese.
