"This class is my favorite subject"
"It's recess." Dylan replied to my joke. We were seated on the round table. The canteen itself was a warm, inviting space—an oasis for students between classes. Long wooden tables, polished by the touch of hundreds of students, stretch out under the soft glow of fluorescent lights.
In one corner, the colorful array of snack racks brim with bags of chips, candy bars, and biscuits—each wrapper a promise of a sugary escape. The fridge hums quietly, stocked with bottles of cold soda and juice, their vibrant labels catching the eye.
I bought six Spanish bread that I could share with Dylan and Jasper. Jasper decided to have recess with us since his best friend, Frankie separated from him to work on his unfinished assignment upstairs.
"What did you pick for your poem recitation?"Jasper took a drink from his fruit soda before answering. "The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe."
"That's sad." I snorted. "Why didn't you pick something better?"
Jasper shrugged it off. "It's awful to pick a love poem."Dylan shielded himself from the sun and stepped into the shadow of the tree. "I don't think it is not an awful poem."
"Oh dear, my lovely dear!" I recited. "Thy heart is my desire."
They both laughed. "You should bless the amulets and the weapons with holy water tonight." Dylan said. "It would be very useful if you go patrolling. To protect you guys from the wicked. Otherwise they will steal your souls.""Demons do possessed people right?" I asked.
"Demonic possession happens when a person is weak. They attack you at the most fragile state." Dylan stared at the Quadrangle. "Shadow Eaters. Mostly they're the ones who prey on them."
"Why can't they just be called Mukbang eaters?"
"What the hell?" Dylan said in astonishment.
"Yeah and they could post how thirsty they are for souls in the internet."
"Dude, could you just listen for a second?" asked Dylan. "Regardless on how we should act upon this, you must take it as a joke."
"Alright."
"I will set up a meeting with Jose later."
"I thought you're going on Saturday?" Jasper said.
"We need to act as soon as possible before we could find another dead body." Dylan gave us a hard look.
"I would have looked for something at the Grimoire to wake the dead and ask them some questions."I said.
"Necromancy is not allowed in being a witcher." Jasper scolded. "I read it last night. There would be significant consequences. Don't dabble with it."
"And too much dark magic could corrupt you. It would make you strong but it would have some nightmarish effect." added Dylan.
"Like?" asked Jasper.
Dylan paused for a moment. "I've seen how a good witch turned into a psychotic killer, rampaging through town to town because she felt insatiable killing."
"That sounds ugly." I sat up straight.
"dark magic demands very prices, Z." said Dylan. "And necromancy demands much higher prices since they took something, like sacrifices. Lives, blood or any object."
"Definitely not something I would dabbling about." Jasper crumbled the piece of paper and threw it to the trashcan adjacent to our table. "What do humans see about them? The demons?"
"Humans sees demons and other supernatural creatures like normal people. But at night, they had their will to transform and show their true form."
"Is this your true form?" I asked.
"Yes. I'm half human half fae, Z."
"And who was your father? I know your mom, since she used to visit our house to talk matters to my mom when I was 4."
I could vividly remember gave her some herbs that calm her nerves and reduced her headache.
She even gave me a bracelet. Unknowingly, it was a magical protection.
"She was killed." Dylan said bitterly. For the first time I saw true and powerful rage in his eyes. I didn't want to press on. I actually felt terrible for bringing it up.
Dylan took a deep breath, trying to calm the anger building inside him. "But whoever my father was, it doesn't matter.""Maybe he was a self-centered asshole."
Dylan smiled. "Maybe." It vanished again. "But we can't sit here and wait."
I leaned back against the table, gazing at Emily who was sitting with her friends at the canteen. She stood up and headed towards us. "You three looks like you're into a meeting." She inserted her hand into her pocket and gave me a heart-shape necklace. "Babe, this is for you."
"Aw, thanks babe." I pressed my lips on her cheek.
I saw Jasper froze at the moment. I didn't know if he was awestruck by my girlfriend or was he getting more and more tense than dumb. I liked it when he stayed that way.
"We are. About our house." I nodded. "Just the usual stuff bothering us. Electric bills."
"My mama has the same problem." said Emily. "Every weekend we experience some harsh brownout in our barangay even we pay the exact amount."
"I have to go." Jasper suddenly said.
Dylan and I glanced at him.
"You want to go?"Emily asked.Jasper looked warily at her. "Yeah. Frankie just chatted me. I need to see him."
"Are you copying those assignments again?" said Dylan.
"Yup, and algebra is kicking my ass." He instantly walked away and I followed him to the corridor, leaving Dylan and Emily at the park.
My eyebrows drew together. "Li, what was that about?"
"I need to copy the assignment." He explained briefly.
"Copy?"
"Yeah."
"But that's not what you're thinking about. I think you're attracted to my girlfriend."
His eyes widened. "God no. Never."
"Then what is it? It's not right that you're not telling me if I can help."
"You can't help anything, Zade, and you don't have to pretend that you don't hate me." Jasper grumbled and he was glad he was looking away. I had a feeling it was a shallow reason for him to excuse himself.
"Of course, I hate you more than anything in this universe but you're still my brother." I said. He shot me a puzzled look when he saw how worried I was. At some point, I began to appreciate my little brother. He showed us how kind he was when he was seven.
I forgot how kind he actually was. He shared his pokemon cards with me which we kept it in a cabinet at home.I should've been there for him too when he was having troubles in school. Now anxiety was taking over our new life and it was taking its toll on Jasper
"I'm not feeling well, Zade." He said with all honesty. He looked like he was going to throw up. "There's something about your girlfriend. Please, don't let her know. I don't want to cause any trouble. I'll see you both later."
He gave one last disgusted look at Emily before he sprint towards the stairs.
