Lisa couldn’t sleep. The others had returned from the party and headed straight to bed, but she remained wide awake. Her mind was restless, overwhelmed by the recent events. She really wanted to talk to Jennie, to feel the comfort of her best friend's arms around her, but Jennie had been exhausted and fell asleep almost instantly. Lisa didn’t want to disturb her.
Feeling suffocated, she decided to get out of bed. She quietly left her room and wandered downstairs, her steps echoing softly in the silent house. The mansion was beautiful, its grandeur somehow magnified in the quiet of the night, but Lisa found no solace in its beauty. Instead, it reminded her of how distant and cold everything felt.
She stepped out into the garden, the cool night air immediately wrapping around her. She was only wearing silk pajamas—a loose shirt and shorts—and the chill seeped through, but she didn’t care. It was a strange comfort, the cold, almost like a punishment she felt she deserved.
Tears started to fall as she sat down on the grass, her knees drawn to her chest. Everything was too much to bear. Her parents had sold her, she had been assaulted, and she’d gone through an abortion. It was a series of traumas that she couldn’t make sense of. Why was this happening to her? Did she somehow deserve it? The questions looped endlessly in her mind, driving her deeper into despair.
Just then, she heard the sound of footsteps behind her. Mingyu appeared, his expression softening when he saw her. Without a word, he draped a blanket he’d brought over her shoulders and sat down beside her.
“What are you doing out here, noona?” he asked quietly, concern evident in his voice.
Lisa took a shaky breath, wiping her tears hastily with the back of her hand. “I couldn’t sleep. Everything just feels... too much. I wanted to talk to Jennie, but she was so tired. I didn’t want to bother her.”
Mingyu nodded, understanding. “I saw you heading downstairs. I couldn’t sleep either, so I followed you.”
They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their unspoken thoughts hanging heavily in the air. Mingyu eventually leaned his head against Lisa’s shoulder, offering her the only comfort he could think of—his presence.
“Are you okay?” Lisa asked softly, looking at him with concern. Mingyu had lost his father recently. It was a wound she knew was still fresh.
“No,” Mingyu admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “But I have to act like I am, for Mina’s sake. She doesn’t know what’s going on yet, and I don’t want to scare her. I don’t know how much longer I can keep pretending, though.”
