FELICIA
"You think they did it?" Lesego asks.
Felicia: "It couldn't be them. What would they want with Itu anyway?"
He looks at me sharply then frowns at me. It's like I just spoke gibberish.
Lesego: "If you say so, then I guess it's that." I sigh. "Don't you wanna wake him up before dinner?"
I don't know why he chose to sleep tonight knowing that the whole family is here. Hopefully he'll wake up in time for dinner. We listen to the crickets chirp in the backyard as we sit in silence for a while, while the rest of this big family is in the house. In this family, no one has their own home, every house is everyone's. There is no such thing as privacy. As irritating as it is, I've learnt to accept it. Sometimes they can come here and sleep here for no reason at all without consent. Itumeleng does it too, especially with Martin. He would go all the way to Bloemfontein with no care at all.
I then remember what Tiisetso told me earlier today. I look at Lesego with a smile.
Lesego: "What?"
Felicia: "Tiisetso told me there might be a new wife in the family."
He looks down and smiles. I think he's trying to hide it. This guy!
Lesego: "Her name is Kgomotso. Her meeting the family was really unplanned. She came to my house and that same day, Itu was in the car accident and I couldn't leave her alone, so I came with her."
Felicia: "Tiisetso also told me that Zile and Kaone wanted to chop her head off."
He doesn't like the sound of that at all, I can tell.
Lesego: "They must know their place."
Felicia: "You really like this girl, don't you?"
He looks like he's fighting the smile, but this time he gives in.
Lesego: "I'm going to lie to you, I love her, Felicia."
I know this Lesego. The last time he was like this was just a few years ago. It seems like he really loves her. And when he's in love, you really can't stop him. I just hope it will last.
Felicia: "I want to meet her." He looks at me.
Lesego: "When?"
Felicia: "Anytime will be fine."
Lesego: "I'll see if she won't be busy."
Felicia: "But do you think she's the one?" I ask after a pause. He gives me a long look.
Lesego: "Felicia, I've met many women in my life, but none of them ever made me feel this way."
Felicia: "That's because you've slept with them and then dump them the next morning."
Lesego: "Exactly."
Felicia: "Exactly what?"
Lesego: "It's different with Kgomotso. That same night I met her, I thought I'd do what I always do, but something about her that just... it just couldn't make me do it."
Damn. He's really sure of himself. Now I want to see her.
I look at Lesego carefully. Yes. He is in love.Felicia: "Tomorrow I want to see her." He smirks. "And I'll speak to Khumbuzile and Kaone when I can, okay?"
Lesego: "Okay."
One thing I like about being the first wife here, is these animals taking my orders. Yes, Kaone may have given us our first child, but ironically, I'm the first wife, then Khumbuzile follows and then Kaone was the third one to get married. They know that when I want things done now, they'll do it. If I'd tell them to kill the Ndlanzis now, they'd do so without asking questions. That's what I like about being the first wife. But those Ndlanzis haven't killed anyone, so we have no reason to kill them, yet.
