Liliana and Mariah sat in the company garden, enjoying the late afternoon sun and sipping on cool bottles of *sikhye*, a popular Korean rice drink often enjoyed in the summer. As they relaxed, Liliana read the article about Maya's departure out loud to Mariah, her voice filled with concern.
Mariah sighed, shaking her head. "Wow, I can't believe she's leaving. This is going to hit Hyunjin hard."
Liliana nodded, her brows furrowed in worry. "Yeah, I know. I feel like I should check on him." She hesitated for a moment before pulling out her phone and typing a message to Hyunjin:
"Hi, this is Liliana from the company. I haven't seen you around lately. Where are you?"
A few moments later, her phone buzzed with a reply: "I'm at our spot."
Liliana's eyes widened as she realized he meant the rooftop. She quickly stood up, leaving Mariah behind. "I need to go. I'll catch up with you later," she said, hurrying toward the building. She made her way to the stairs, her mind racing with what she might say when she saw him.
"How do I even start a conversation"
Hyunjin stood by the edge of the rooftop, leaning heavily on the railing. He wore a loose white t-shirt tucked into ripped black jeans, his usual style of laid-back cool. His shoulder-length blonde hair was pulled into a low ponytail, strands falling loosely around his face, adding to his disheveled appearance. His eyes, usually bright and lively, were dull, reflecting his inner turmoil.
Liliana approached him cautiously, noticing his faraway gaze. "Hey," she began softly, "how are you feeling?"
Hyunjin let out a heavy sigh, not bothering to mask his emotions. "Lost," he admitted. "I'm mad at Maya for being selfishly selfless. She's leaving everything behind to help others, but what about me? I'm losing my best friend."
He reached down, snatching his drawing notepad and pencil from his bag on the ground. With frustration boiling over, he began to sketch the building opposite the company, but his hands were unsteady, his lines shaky. Liliana watched, her heart aching for him. She saw a tear fall from his eye, landing on the page.
Hyunjin groaned, his voice thick with emotion. "Nothing is going the way it should!" he shouted. In a fit of anger, he ripped the page from the notebook, crumpled it into a ball, and hurled it off the roof. Liliana quickly moved forward, grabbing his hands before he could do more damage.
"Hyunjin, calm down," she urged, her voice steady but gentle. "It's going to be okay."
He turned to her, his eyes filled with pain. "No, it's not," he said, his voice cracking. "It's never going to be okay."
Liliana's eyes welled up with tears, but she held them back, taking a step back to give him space. "You're right," she said firmly, her voice strong. "It won't be perfect. But you have to accept this, Hyunjin. Maya made this decision because she wants to help people, and you need to be happy for her."
