The Stark Watch was light in her hands. Tony had designed it that way on purpose, once taking great pride in his sleek and impressive technology. Amberly traced her thumb across the cracked screen as Harley fiddled with his own watch on the desk.
He cursed as a screw dropped on the floor. Amberly bent down to get it so he wouldn't have to aggravate his foot. As it was, Harley had said foot propped up on the edge of his bed with a pillow under it.
"Thanks," he said as she handed it to him.
Harley had invited her over to Commissioner Gordon's house. His foster father was still at work, so Amberly and Harley had free range to do what they needed.
The pair had stuck to Harley's room where he'd set up a laptop to connect the watches to. Amberly was waiting to take a crack at it, but Harley needed to pry them apart first.
It was a simple space. The only furniture being a decently sized bed and desk near the window. Harley said that the room had been a spare bedroom since Barbara moved out to live on her own. The commissioner had set Harley up with a new navy blue comforter and matching pillows though. It was homey, she thought.
A picture Amberly had seen in the living room captured Barbara and her dad standing together. The man had a large mustache and was dressed in a police uniform. Amberly wondered if he looked much different now.
"Alright I think I'm ready for you." Harley slid the laptop towards Amberly. His watch was connected by cord to it.
She carefully carried it over to the bed and spread out. The program was open for Amberly to work her magic so they would have full access to all the innerworkings of the watch. It didn't look like it would be too complicated, but it would take time.
Amberly got to work, typing away furiously. The code was familiar, pieced together by Tony and Amberly had a good idea where to start.
"How long do you think it will take?" Harley asked spinning a screwdriver in his hand.
"A few hours, maybe more if I fun into an issue."
Comfortable silence fell over them. The only noise to be heard were Amberly's taps on the keyboard. Eventually she felt a dip in the bed as Harley came to sit down next to her.
"You could spend the night?" he said somewhat hopeful.
She shook her head. "I can't intrude like that."
"So, you have to go home?" Harley questioned and Amberly knew they were at the beginning of another argument. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine Harley. I have a place. It's just not great, but it works." She refused to make eye contact with him.
"Is it worse than your mom's?"
"I'm not talking about it."
Fortunately, Harley conceded and moved from resting against the headboard to lying flat on his back. He was restless though and ended up rolling onto his side facing away from her. Amberly tried to ignore the tugging at the back of her mind that questioned when things had gotten so tense between them.
She focused on the screen in front of her, continuing to work until a knock at the bedroom door had her looking up. Commissioner Gordon leaned on the door frame and peaked inside.
Beside her, Harley sat up and scooted away. While Tony never would have cared, knowing all of them considered themselves good as siblings, she guessed the commissioner wouldn't have the same line of thought.
Amberly hid the watch out of view, placing it behind the screen of the laptop.
"Hey just checking in. I picked up a pizza for dinner if you both want some."
