Amber sought out Jason the day after their talk. He had stayed at the manor for the weekend and was holed up in the library when she found him.
"Hey what's up?" he asked closing the book he was reading and setting it aside to give her his full attention.
"I was hoping to visit the hospital today," Amber said unsure how the conversation was going to go. She hadn't been sure how to approach the others after the fallout and hoped that seeking out Jason might be a good place to start.
His eyebrows rose in surprise. "Would you want some company? I could take you," he offered alleviating some of the nervousness that Amber had felt.
"Yeah, I'd like that."
Jason shot up with a smile and told her to meet him in the garage while he grabbed keys. What he didn't mention was that he was going to swipe the keys to one of Bruce's cars.
"Old man thought he had hidden these from me," Jason said dangling a key ring from his finger with a grin. When he pushed on the fob the lights of Bruce's red mustang lit up, and Amber remembered Dick telling her how much Jason had loved that car. "Hurry and get in before Bruce realizes," he urged opening the driver's door.
Amber thought about asking if it was a bad idea but pushed the questions aside when Jason started the engine. It wasn't really like she had any other way to see Harley.
Distracted by the thrill of driving Bruce's mustang, Jason didn't ask Amber about the millions of things that must have been weighing on his mind since the reveal of her secret identity. Instead, their drive to the hospital was a quick one, filled with Jason's excitement, and Amber subtly gripping the handle on the door next to her.
There was some relief in the stomach-turning ride for Amber, who wasn't sure how much she should tell the others about her past and how she became Spider-Woman. It was a confusing tale, especially when Amber wasn't a hundred percent sure how she ended up with powers herself.
By the time they arrived at the hospital, all worries of herself were forgotten. Jason explained who they were to the policemen posted outside before Amber was allowed in the room.
"What am I supposed to do now?" she asked Harley, only this time he didn't respond. She stood by Harley's bed watching the rise and fall of his chest, and wishing for him to wake up.
With the door cracked open, Amber could hear Jason talking to one of the doctors outside, asking about Harley's condition.
"I'm not sure there's much that can be done," the doctor said. "We can keep him stable but without more advanced medical care it's unlikely he'll come out of the coma on his own."
"That's it?" Jason asked, his voice strained in an agitated way Amber hadn't heard before.
"Medicine is advancing constantly. With Bruce Wayne's generous offer to pay for all of Mr. Keener's medical expenses we may find a way to combat the toxin affecting him and have him returning to normal everyday life. It will just take time, perhaps within the next few years."
Amber couldn't wait years. She wanted to curse the universe they had landed in and its lack of progress. If only they had experts here like Bruce Banner or Dr. Cho. Harley deserved the best they had to offer, and if that meant getting him back to the Avenger's Tower, she'd do anything.
"I'm going to get you home," she told Harley. Whatever she had to do to make sure her family was okay was worth it to her. "I promise."
Minutes later Jason entered the room, hands stuffed in the pockets of his leather jacket.
"Thanks for driving me," Amber said wondering if Harley could hear them in his sleep. She liked to think he'd be happy that she hadn't come alone.
Jason nodded, eyes wandering towards Harley but never staring too long. Whatever had happened in the past with Bruce, Amber could tell it affected Jason's sense of justice for kids.
