JJ was walking to Buck's hospital room, ready to bring him home, when she spotted him and Bobby having a heated conversation in the hallway.
She noticed the angry look on her father's face, making her frown, and when she saw Bobby's sympathetic one, she immediately began to connect the dots in her head.
"I quit." Was all she heard her Dad say before he walked away, not noticing his daughter stood behind him.
"Bobby..." JJ walked up to the man, catching his attention. "You can't let him quit! Please don't." She pleaded, but all he did was sigh. "Being a firefighter is his life. You have to fix this." Bobby squeezed her arm, not replying to her before he walked in the opposite direction.
JJ wiped a stray tear from her cheek before walking to her Dad's room. Just two days ago he was spinning her around in his arms because he had passed his test.
And now it was all for nothing.
"You can't quit." Was all she said to him when she made it to his room.
Buck, now changed into a fresh pair of clothes, refused to make eye contact with his daughter.
"It doesn't concern you, JJ." He said, slipping his hoodie on. "It does when you're miserable!" She snapped, letting out a shaky breath. "Don't you talk to me like that!" He said back, in the same tone.
JJ flinched back at his words. They never fought. Like ever. The whole time they'd known each other, they'd never had a true argument.
But it seems that since the firetruck bombing, their relationship had been heavily strained.
"I'm sorry—" He said after realising what he'd done. "Let's just go home." She said, not acknowledging his apology.
Buck had been moping in bed for the last week and JJ didn't know how to help him.
When she wasn't at school, she was sat in bed with him, trying her hardest to help him, even when he made it clear he was fine, she still stayed by his side, holding onto his hand while they watched shitty cooking shows.
But it needed to stop. So she called the Diaz boys.
She and Christopher sat downstairs talking, while Eddie handled Buck upstairs.
JJ was showing Christopher some of her new drawings when Buck and Eddie emerged from the stairs.
Buck and Eddie were talking in the kitchen, when Chris shouted to greet Buck. "Hi, Buck." He announced, making the man turn around and walk into the living room.
"Hey, buddy." He shot Eddie a look. "Uh, what are you doing here?" He looked at JJ, who gave him a knowing look.
"He's hanging out with his Buckley's today!" Eddie exclaimed, pulling his son into a hug. "Cause I have to go to work today."
"Uh, where's Carla?" He asked. "She went to Morongo," Chris answered. "I'm just here to babysit you both." JJ teased, getting a laugh out of the boy.
"So, take them out, have some fun. Maybe you'll learn something." Eddie said to Buck, before mumbling something else that they couldn't hear.
"Love you guys." He said to JJ and Chris. "Love you!" They shouted back.
After Eddie left, Buck turned to Chris with a grin. "So what do you like to do for fun?"
And that's how they found themselves at the pier.
Christopher had said he'd wanted to come since moving to LA, but with Eddie's work schedule, they never found the time.
