I looked around the Glade. It was somehow peaceful considering the situation I was in. The Glade had a garden filled with ripening fruits and vegetables, a large building in the distance made of wood and a couple smaller buildings in the distance. I saw a forest out the corner of my eye which was densely packed with trees along with shrubs. What caught my attention was the 100 meter stone walls covered in ivy looming over me.

'My name's Alby,' said the dark skinned boy redirecting my attention back to him. He had two other people standing behind him. One has the sandy hair boy from before. The other boy was younger. He looked about 12 or 13 with brown curly hair and a bright smile.
'Can you tell me anything about yourself? Who you are? Where you came from?' Alby continued

I felt a blanket of panic wash over me. I couldn't remember anything. My brain was an empty void.

Why couldn't I remember anything. Wait. What is my name? I don't even know my own name.

I raked my brain for a memory. I came back empty-handed.

'W...Why can't I r...re...remember an...anything' I stuttered trying to keep the panic out of my voice but failing horribly.

Alby, reassuringly, put his hand on my shoulders making me look deep into his dark brown eyes.

'It's ok. It happened to all of us. You will get your name back in a couple of days. It is the only thing they let us keep.'

'They?' I asked as the panic sunk away and curiousity instead filled it

'The shanks that put us here.'

Shanks? What kind of made up shit is this?

'Oh. I almost forgot.' started Alby turning around to face the other two boys behind him

'Meet Newt. He is in charge when I am not around.' said Alby gesturing to the blonde boy

Newt extended his hand for me to shake. I was still cautious but figured that if they wanted to hurt me they would have done it by now.

'Nice to meet you Greenie' said Newt as I shook his hand

'Why is everyone calling me Greenie?' I asked

'It is what we call the Newbies before they remember their name.' answered Alby

'And this is Chuck' said the leader turning to the curly hair boy.

Chuck stuck on his hand for me to shake and once again shook it.

'Nice to meet you.' said Chuck

'Nice to meet you too' I said as I felt a smile play on my lips.

I knew that Chuck and I were going to be close.

'Ok now Newt, Chuck go back to work. I'll take the Greenie on the tour.'

The boys turned around and quickly left.

'Ok. So first this is the box,' said Alby gesturing to the cage I came out of. 'It comes up every month with fresh supplies and a new greenie. This month that is you.'

I glanced back at the Box. It had metal wires which made up the floor and wall. It looked like a lift and it contained crates of what I was guessing was the fresh supplies. Alby started walking away so I quickly followed.

'Where are we?' I questioned

'We are in the centre of the maze and you see those doors,' he said pointing to the opening in the stone walls 'they open and close every night. When they are open our runners run and maze, mapping it, trying to find a way out.' Alby briefly explained

The next hour was spent with me and Alby walking around the Glade as he explained things to me. It was like everything at once. He explained all the other important places like the forest, homestead and the showers. I could tell he was avoiding the topic of the maze. I still can't believe that we are in the centre of a giant fucking maze. Alby also explained the rules and all the jobs like slicer, bagger, builder, slopper, cook, runner, trackhoes and medjack.

At the end of the tour, Alby told me to take a rest to process it. I ended up sitting on a log facing the maze. I started asking myself heaps of questions.

Who am I? Why was I sent here? How long has everyone else been here? What is my name?

All of these questions, sadly, had no answer to them. I started thinking about the maze and what is beyond it. I started wondering if I had family, friends or a boyfriend.

'BOO!' shouted someone right behind me

My thoughts quickly evaporated as I jumped in my seat and turned around only to be met with the face of a beaming child.

'You scared the shit out of me Chuck.' I said while holding a hand over my heart trying to steady my heart rate

'Sorry.' said Chuck unapologetically

The boy sat down next to me. We started talking about life in the Glade. Actually it was more me asking questions and Chuck answering by over sharing. Even though we met a couple of hours ago I felt close with Chuck. He was already like a brother to me. I ran out of curiosity so instead we started sharing bad jokes. Even though they were horrible I felt myself laughing for the first time since I could remember
