Chapter 3

"I don't need your permission"

August went by very quickly; indeed, it was a swift month.

I spent my days wandering around the school, watching as more students arrived. Boys, girls, teenagers, teachers... I still didn't know anyone. If it weren't for Hagrid and his creatures, I wouldn't have said a word all month. My parents kept sending me letters every week, but I wasn't in the mood to reply to them all. I only managed to respond to one of them, in particular, just to stop them from insisting and worrying...

Mom and Dad,

Thank you for all the letters, and I apologize for not responding until today. These have been quite... hectic days, I'd say. The people here are very kind, especially Headmistress McGonagall. They've given me an introduction to everything I'll be studying this year, and they've shown me every corner of the school. However, I have to attend a year below the one I was in at Castelobruxo; I'm not entirely sure why, something to do with my birth date and the start dates here. Anyway, it doesn't bother me, it's not like I haven't already lost a year...

I hope you're well.

Ángeles.

I lied. I've been lying since I arrived at this school, lied since I left, and I'm still lying in the letter. I don't know, is it so hard for them to leave me alone? I really don't want to keep explaining myself. If it weren't for Hagrid, I would have completely lost it. When I explained to him about going into a lower year, he gave me some things to keep in mind, along with all sorts of warnings about my future classmates. I think it will be fun.

"Good news for you, right?" he smiled. "You'll be with Harry and his friends. I don't think I need to introduce Harry Potter... Ron is his best friend, and Hermione is the girl of the group; she's really smart, unlike Ron. There's a shy boy named Neville; I think you could be good friends. On the other hand, you'll be with that Malfoy boy, you should be careful not to offend him or his father..."

"Oh, you had warned me about him. Don't worry, if there's one thing I'm not afraid of, it's people who can't defend themselves."

Hagrid laughed.

"I hope you keep that attitude, he's really sinister... On the other hand, you'll meet Professor Snape, you'll recognize him because he's the least pleasant person I've ever met. Professor Trelawney is... unique. You might also have Professor Sprout."

"Hagrid, that's too many names," I laughed. "I doubt I'll remember them all. Anyway, thanks for the tips. I'm not even sure which subjects I'll have this year."

I went to the Great Hall wearing my Slytherin uniform. I could tell that many people were watching me and whispering, thinking I couldn't hear them. "Is she a new student?" I can't believe they're asking this; it seems like they're in a contest of stating the obvious, and they're winning. "She doesn't seem like she's from here" they're still at it with the obvious statements—clearly, I'm not like you. "She's hot" well, I admit I didn't expect that.

I sat at the Slytherin house table and kept looking straight ahead; or rather, staring into nothing but with my eyes fixed forward. Not many people my age had arrived yet, but I wasn't too interested. I wanted my first day to be over as quickly as possible and to stay as unnoticed as possible. I don't know, these people scared me. No one had approached me to talk, not even people from other houses. Belonging to Slytherin must be really intimidating and unpleasant for them to look at me like that without even knowing me.
