Tim and Lucy's alarm clock buzzed far too early, jolting them both awake. The room was still dark, the soft glow of the early morning sun barely beginning to peek through the curtains. They exchanged sleepy glances, both silently acknowledging the significance of the day ahead—it was their first day back at work after months of parental leave.
Lucy yawned, stretching her arms above her head. "I don't think I remember how to wear anything but pajamas," she joked, her voice still thick with sleep.
Tim chuckled, rolling over to kiss her forehead. "You'll remember. It's like riding a bike. Except the bike has two crying babies, and it's on fire."
The couple made their way to the nursery, where the twins were already stirring. It was a routine they had perfected over the last few months—Lucy would pick out outfits while Tim handled the diaper changes. Today, though, there was an underlying sense of nervousness.
Lucy glanced over at Tim as he expertly changed their son's diaper. "You think they'll be okay with Tamara? It's her first full day alone with them."
"They'll be fine," Tim reassured her, though there was a hint of concern in his voice. "Tamara's been great with them so far. And we're just a phone call away if she needs anything."
Once the twins were fed and dressed, Lucy handed one to Tim and took the other herself. They stood in front of the mirror, looking at their reflection—two exhausted but proud parents, holding their children close. "We got this," Lucy said, more to herself than anyone else.
The drive to the precinct was filled with a mix of anticipation and nostalgia. The city bustled with morning activity, and the familiar sights brought back memories of their life before the twins. Tim parked the car, and they sat for a moment, taking in the scene.
"It feels weird being back," Lucy admitted, adjusting her blouse. "Like everything's the same, but we're different."
Tim nodded in agreement. "Yeah, but in a good way. We've grown."
As they entered the precinct, the noise and energy hit them like a wave. Officers bustled about, phones rang, and the familiar scent of coffee wafted through the air. Their return had clearly been anticipated—officers and detectives alike greeted them warmly, with a mix of excitement and curiosity.
"Look who's back!" Nyla exclaimed as she approached them.
Everyone spread around, Tim and Lucy exchanged smiles, grateful for the warm welcome.
"Missed having you two around," Nolan said, clapping Tim on the back. "But I see you've been busy."
"Yeah, you could say that," Tim replied, chuckling. "But it's good to be back. We missed this place."
