———————————————As I buckled Kali back in and closed the car door, I could feel Karruche's eyes on me, but I didn't turn around. I just wanted to get out of there.
"Alright, drive safe," she called out as I got into the driver's seat.
"Yeah, you too," I muttered, not really meaning it. I started the car and pulled away from the curb, my mind racing. The whole interaction felt off, especially after seeing that dude with her. I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right.
As I drove, I thought about Quincy and the mess we were about to dive into. This whole situation had layers, and now it felt like we were just scratching the surface.
I arrived at La Ciel with Kali in her stroller, the crisp air mixing with the scent of freshly baked bread from the nearby café. My parents were already seated on the patio, enjoying the afternoon sun. As I approached, my mom's face lit up at the sight of Kali.
"There's my beautiful granddaughter!" She exclaimed, standing up to greet us.
My dad gave me a warm smile, "Hey, sweetheart. How's my little girl doing?"
I leaned in to hug them both before settling into my chair. "I'm doing great. Just got back from dropping Kasin off with Karruche," I said, adjusting Kali's blanket as she cooed from her stroller.
My mom noticed the slight tension in my voice. "Everything okay with that situation?"
I shrugged, "Yeah, it's fine. Just trying to keep things peaceful for the kids' sake."
My dad nodded, his face showing concern. "Well, you know we're always here for you, whatever you need."
The waiter came by, and we ordered our meals, slipping into casual conversation, but I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered after my interaction with Karruche, especially after seeing that man with her.
As we enjoyed lunch, I noticed my dad's gaze on me. He leaned in, serious. "Ryan, that guy with Karruche—did you tell Quincy he gave you an evil stare?"
I hesitated, knowing I hadn't mentioned Quincy's doubts to them. "No, Dad. It's probably nothing, just some guy she knows."
He wasn't convinced. "You sure? You don't need to be dealing with her mess."
My mom chimed in, trying to calm him down. "Deron, let Ryan handle it. She'll talk to Quincy if it's necessary."
I nodded, grateful for the support. "Thanks, Mom. I'll take care of it. Right now, let's just enjoy lunch and Kali."
Dad sighed, but nodded, clearly still concerned. "Alright, but you know we're here for you, no matter what. Don't hesitate to call us if anything seems off, okay?"
"Of course, Dad," I assured him. "I've got it under control."
I could feel the weight of my dad's concern, and I knew he'd be watching closely for anything that might seem out of place.
I was chillin' at the bar with Kelcy and Justin, just like the old days. Kelcy sipped her margarita and cut straight to the point. "So, you really don't think Kasin's yours?"
I shook my head, frustration in my voice. "Nah, he don't look like me at all."
Kelcy raised an eyebrow. "Kids don't always gotta look like the dad, Quincy. Me and Kelly look more like our mom. We just got our dad's eyes and lips."
"Yeah, but Kasin don't look like Karruche either. Meanwhile, my daughter's basically my twin."
Justin leaned back after taking a swig of his Corona. "Bro, I always knew Karruche was shady, but this? You've been payin' her $4000 a month in child support, and the kid might not even be yours? That's wild!"
I nodded, sipping my Don Julio straight. "Tell me about it."
Kelcy grabbed a tortilla chip, looking at me. "Did you ask her about gettin' a test?"
I sighed. "That's not gonna be easy. It's gonna turn into a whole damn fight."
Justin smirked. "If it were me, I'd just sneak an at-home test, but I know you like to give people a chance to come clean. Just ask her straight up. If she gets defensive, she's lyin'. If she's cool about it, maybe the kid is yours."
Kelcy nodded. "Yeah, Justin's got a point. What did Ryan say?"
"She said to talk to Karruche first, be upfront."
Kelcy smiled. "Ryan's a good one. She's smart. You're lucky to have her, Q. Listen to her, don't be mad emotional."
I leaned back, taking in what Kelcy said. She was right—Ryan always had the right approach, even when I didn't want to hear it. But this whole situation had me twisted up.
Justin slapped me on the back, pulling me out of my thoughts. "So, what you gon' do, man? You can't let this keep eatin' at you."
I sighed. "I'm gonna talk to her. I ain't about to sneak behind her back. I'll just confront her and get the truth out."
Kelcy nodded approvingly. "That's the best move. You gotta know for sure."
Justin raised his bottle. "To finding the truth, then. No more payin' for some other dude's kid!"
We all laughed, but it was that kind of laugh that didn't reach my chest. I just couldn't shake the feeling. After downing the rest of my drink, I stood up. "I'mma head out. Gotta get my mind right before I deal with this."
Kelcy gave me a quick hug. "Good luck, Quincy. You got this."
As I walked out, Justin called after me, "Handle your business, Q! And keep us posted, man!"
I threw up a hand and left, my mind already racing with how the conversation with Karruche would go.
