In the hospital, tensions were running high. Ryan's folks and her brother were rightfully furious, demanding answers about that scumbag Keith. It seemed like the more we wanted to know, the less we got, and Keith was nowhere in sight.
Jude and I stepped up to update them on Ryan's situation. "She's holding steady," I started, trying to keep things straightforward. "The doctors are keeping an eye on her, and they're doing all they can. Same goes for the baby, but it's too early to say much."
Jude chimed in, "We had to spin a little tale about her and Quincy being married to squeeze info out of the doctor. We talked to the detectives and they're on the hunt for Keith."
Ryan's parents exchanged a look, their anger softening into worry. Her brother stayed tense, ready to unleash on Keith whenever he showed his face. DJ, Kelcy, and Kelly were absorbing it all, still trying to wrap their heads around the mess.
I reassured Ryan's family, "We're not letting this slide. Keith will face the music for what he did."
In the hospital waiting room, Ryan's mom, Dana, came up to me with a solemn look. "Quincy, I can tell you're more than just a friend to Ryan. I'm sorry I nudged her toward Keith."
Her words hit me, and I met her gaze, recognizing the unspoken truth. Ryan's dad, Deron, chimed in, "We appreciate you being there for her. Means a lot."
A mix of emotions welled up in me – gratitude for their understanding, sadness for what Ryan went through, and a quiet anger toward Keith. "I just want her to be okay," I said, the honesty in my voice hanging in the air.
Dana nodded, regret flickering in her eyes, and Deron patted my shoulder, saying, "Thank you, Quincy."
But I redirected the gratitude, "Honestly, it was Jude who sensed something was off and pushed to check on Ryan. She deserves all the credit."
Jude, standing nearby, gave a nod, accepting the acknowledgment. Then the doctor came out to give us an update on Ryan and we all stood up.
"Doc, this is Ryan's family," Jude mentioned before choosing not to speak.
"Is our daughter okay? When can we see her?" Dana asked, tears still in her eyes.
"Ryan is awake, and she and the baby are doing just fine. You brought her here just in time."
Dr. Miller flipped through his clipboard and continued, "Who is Quincy?"
I stood up, "That's me, sir."
"Miss Ryan has requested to see you."
I sought confirmation from her parents, wanting to be respectful. "Go on in, Son," Deron said.
I followed Dr. Miller into her room, and as soon as she looked at me, she started crying as I hugged her.
"Dr. Miller, can you please give us some privacy?" He swiftly excused himself.
"Quincy, thank you for getting me out of there."
I held her face and kissed her. "Baby, you never have to thank me for protecting you, do you hear me? That's my job."
We continued to hug. "Ryan, the detectives are here for questioning. What happened?"
"Quincy, I-"
"Baby, you ain't gotta say it now, but all your family is here, and they wanna see you."
"They are? You called them?" She asked.
"Yes, I had to. Ryan, you were in bad shape, and I had to lie, saying I was your husband so the doctors and them would give me information on you. If it weren't for Jude, you and the baby probably would've had a thin chance of surviving."
She started crying again. "I can't believe Keith did this to me."
"Baby, tell me what happened," I said, gently removing her hair that stuck to her tear-stained face.
"Okay, but I want all of my family in here, including the detectives, to get it all out in one shot," she responded.
"Ok, I gotchu." I gave her a deep kiss.
"I love you, Quincy."
"I love you too, Ryan. I'll be right back."
