——————————————I'd been driving in circles for like 30 minutes when Kali started screaming her little head off. I checked the time—yep, it was feeding time. Pulled over in the McDonald's lot, trying to get her settled, but she was just not calming down.
"What's wrong, baby girl?" I checked her diaper, and of course, she was soaked.
"Oh, that's it, huh? You want Mama to get you outta that soggy diaper?" I said, kissing all over her face.
She was not feeling all my kisses, so I backed off. "Alright, alright, Mama's bad," I laughed. Once she was good, we got back on the road, still trying to find Quincy.
"Kali, where do you think Daddy went?" I mumbled, feeling that knot of worry tighten. I was about ready to cry, just lost and worried.
I pulled over again, put my head on the steering wheel, and then it hit me. Back when Quincy and I were filming STAR, he told me about this park his mom used to take him to when he was down or when they needed some time together.
I pulled up to Glendale Park and spotted Quincy's car right away, but he wasn't in it. I cracked open the back door, checking on Kali, who was out like a light. Carefully lifting her out of the car seat, I whispered, "Come on, baby girl. Let's go find Daddy. Wonder where he's hiding?"
I started walking around, scanning the park, and finally saw him sitting alone on a bench. He had a single rose in his hand, looked like he'd picked it from the bushes nearby. I held back for a second, listening as he talked to himself.
"Mommy, I miss you so much. I wish you were here," he whispered, his voice heavy with sadness. "I got a baby girl now—yeah, you're a grandma. We named her Kali Princess, just so she'd have your initials. Another KP." He chuckled, but it faded fast. "And... you have a grandson too, or you did. I just found out he's not mine. His name's Kasin, and I love him so much. I'm lost, Mom. I need you."
Hearing him like that, my heart shattered. I couldn't just watch him go through this alone. I walked over and sat down next to him, slipping my arm around his shoulders while I held Kali close. He leaned into me, finally letting out all the grief he'd been holding back.
"I'm so sorry, baby," I murmured, squeezing him tight
"I loved that little boy, Ryan," he said, barely able to get the words out."I know you did. I'm here for you. Always." I pulled him in, kissing his forehead gently, hoping I could take away just a little bit of the hurt.
He looked at me, his voice soft. "Can you and Kali please come home?"
"Quincy, let's just go," I said, dodging the conversation I knew we still had to have. We shared a quiet kiss, and I stayed silent, knowing now wasn't the time to say I wasn't moving back until we worked through things. I called my parents, asking them to meet us so I could drive Quincy's car back to his place while my mom drove mine and my dad followed in theirs.
✨✨✨✨
"Thanks, Mom and Dad. I got Quincy settled in bed—he's asleep now," I said, giving them both hugs and kisses.
"Honey, are you sure you'll be alright? Do you need us to take the baby?" my mom asked, glancing over at Kali, who was happily playing with her toy in her swing.
"No, we're okay. I don't want to leave Quincy alone right now," I replied, trying to reassure her.
My dad looked at me with concern. "Baby girl, what's going on with him?"
"He's just dealing with a lot," I said, hoping to end the conversation there.
"He found out about that boy not being his, didn't he?" he guessed gently.
"How'd you know about that?" I asked confused, 'cause I definitely didn't tell him.
"DJ told us." Dad replied.
In my head I knew either Justin or Kelcy must've said something to DJ and Kelly. Knowing them, it was probably Justin.
"Ok, well, I'm not talking about it." I tried my hardest to keep the frustration out of my voice, and thankfully, my mom stepped in before things could get tense.
"We'll head out, honey. Call us if you need anything," she said with a comforting smile.
After a few more hugs and kisses for both me and Kali, they left, giving me space to be here for Quincy.
After my parents left, the house went quiet. I peeked over at Kali, still kicking at her toy in her swing, totally unaware of all the mess around her. I let out a long sigh—at least she was happy for now.
I went back to the bedroom to check on Quincy. He was knocked out, looking so much more peaceful than he'd been earlier, like some of the weight finally lifted off him. Seeing him like that reminded me of all the ups and downs we'd been through, the way he loved Kasin so much despite everything.
Kali's little coos snapped me back to reality. I picked her up, holding her close as I wandered into the living room. Sitting on the couch, I started thinking about everything—how we'd make it through, if Quincy and I could ever really get back to how we used to be.
I whispered to her, "You're loved, baby girl. Don't worry about a thing; Mommy and Daddy got this."
Just then, I heard Quincy's voice from the bedroom. "Ryan?"
I got up, holding Kali as I walked over to him. "Hey, you're awake. How you feelin'?"
He gave me this tired, half-smile. "Better, I think. Thank you for bein' here. I know it ain't been easy, but...I need you close."
I reached over, taking his hand and giving it a squeeze. "I'm here, babe. We're gonna take this one day at a time."
He nodded, looking at me with a mix of pain and relief. For now, we had each other—and Kali—and maybe that was enough to start fixing what's been broken.
