"Shit, baby, that was... incredible. You need to move back in," I said while putting my clothes back on.
"Quincy, you're insane. I've been doing so good getting over you, and then I let you fuck me," Ryan slurred, regret heavy in her voice.
"Ryan, I'm sorry, but you gotta understand how I felt seeing you with your ex—the one who used to beat and cheat on you. And then you lied about it too."
She finally finished putting her bikini back on. "Quincy, I'm too drunk to talk about this. I'm going back to the party. We made enough mistakes for one night."
"Wow, really? So what we just had was a mistake?" I asked, feeling that sting of irritation and hurt.
"Quincy, it's been like five months since we broke up, and I'm finally starting to accept it. Having sex just messes with my head. I need to be sober to think about all this."
She started walking away again, but then she tripped and fell. "Fuck it," I muttered, scooping her up and carrying her. As we walked, we suddenly heard moaning from nearby.
"Quincy, put me down. Do you hear that?"
We got close enough to see, but stayed far enough not to be spotted. "Holy shit! Looks like we ain't the only ones sneakin' around," Ryan laughed. "That sobered me right up!"
We caught a glimpse of Maria and Kelcy getting it on. "I had no idea Maria liked girls," I said, surprised.
"Me either. Come on, let's go. I'm about to tell Jude to take me home. I'm sleepy."
"JUDE!!!" Ryan yelled, "I'm sleepy! Take me home, please?"
"Girl, what?! It's only 11 p.m. Why you so tired?" Jude asked, shooting a suspicious look between me and Ryan.
"I'm just sleepy, okay?" Ryan said, walking off. The way she limped confirmed Jude's suspicions.
"Hm, I know why you're tired," Jude teased. "Alright, I'll take you home! But after these few songs I requested."
Ryan plopped down in our cabana, clearly annoyed and exhausted, resting her head on her hand.
I walked over to her, "I'll take you home."
She sucked her teeth, still slurring, "I know why you wanna take me home. It's cool, I'll wait for Jude."
"Alright, suit yourself! I'm hitting the pool again!" I said, taking off my shirt and tossing it at her, which only annoyed her more. Then, I ran back to the pool.
I dove back into the pool, letting the cool water wash away any leftover tension. It was still lit, with the music bumping and everyone wildin' out. I was having a blast, trying to push everything with Ryan out of my mind for the moment.
A little later, I saw Maria and Kelcy finally show up, looking a little flushed, but they jumped in the pool like nothing happened. I couldn't help but laugh to myself, thinking about what they'd been up to.
As they joined the crew, Amiyah looked back toward the cabana and saw Ryan knocked out, curled up with her head resting on her arm. "Yo, Ryan is out cold," Amiyah said, shaking her head.
Jude glanced over too, then shrugged, "She's had a long day, let her sleep it off. We'll get her home soon."
Maria swam up beside me, wrapping her arms around my neck. "You havin' fun, Q?" she asked with a sly grin.
"Yeah, it's a good night," I replied, trying to keep it cool. But my mind kept drifting back to Ryan, asleep and probably still annoyed with me.
Kelcy splashed us both, breaking the moment. "Come on, let's see who can hold their breath the longest!"
I played along, diving under, but I couldn't shake the feeling that even with all the fun, something just wasn't right.
As we all messed around in the pool, trying to outdo each other with goofy challenges, I kept glancing back at Ryan. She was still out cold in the cabana, looking like she was in a deep sleep. Every time I looked over, something tugged at me, but I kept pushing it down, trying to stay in the moment.
Maria was all over me, laughing and teasing, but my heart wasn't in it like it usually would be. I caught Kelcy's eye, and she gave me this look like she knew exactly what was on my mind. She didn't say anything, though—just shook her head and splashed me again to keep things light.
"Yo, Q, you still with us?" Justin shouted, grinning as he dunked me under the water.
I came up spluttering, pretending to be mad, but I couldn't help laughing. "Man, you play too much!"
But even as I joked around, I couldn't shake the thought that Ryan was just a few feet away, and I wasn't sure if I'd made things worse or better between us tonight.
As the party started to wind down and the pool began to clear out, I noticed Amiyah drying off and heading over to Ryan. She gently shook her awake. Ryan blinked a few times, groggy and disoriented. "C'mon, Ry, it's time to go home," Amiyah said softly.
Ryan sat up, rubbing her eyes, and nodded. She looked over at me, and for a split second, our eyes met. There was something there—something unresolved, hanging between us—but she quickly looked away, focusing on Amiyah instead.
I swam over to the edge of the pool as everyone started gathering their stuff. "You good?" I asked, trying to sound casual, but she barely looked at me.
"Yeah, I'm good," she mumbled, avoiding my gaze.
Jude came up behind her, throwing an arm around her shoulders. "Let's get you home, girl. You need your bed."
Ryan nodded again, her energy completely drained, and started walking with Jude toward the parking lot. I wanted to say something, do something, but I just watched her go, knowing that whatever was left unsaid tonight would have to wait for another day.
Maria came up beside me, slipping her hand into mine. "Ready to go, Q?"
I nodded, but my mind was still on Ryan. "Yeah, let's bounce."
As we headed out, I couldn't help but feel like this night had changed something. I just wasn't sure if it was for the better or worse.
