Chapter Eighteen - Love In The Air
.
Soft fingers brush my hair from my face, slowly waking me from my sleep. I scoot closer to the warm body against me and throw my leg over his own, keeping him in place. The fingers trail down my shoulder and teasingly travel down to rest on my ass.
"No sex" I mumble tiredly, moving my arm to rest across his chest as he held me tightly against him with his other arm. I slightly open one eye and meet beautiful icy blue eyes. Nate makes a point to give my ass a squeeze before moving his hand back to brush my hair back almost too softly.
Last night, I'd cried against him for what felt the longest time ever. Even though he'd been injured, Nate had still found the strength to pull us both upright and lead us to the car. I hadn't wanted to let him go, hadn't wanted him to be taken from me again.
He'd held me against him as we showered, held me against him as we lay in bed, held me against him as I'd fallen asleep. And even as I woke up, he held me against him so tightly I really thought we'd molded together.
Nate leans down and buries his face against my hair, a soft rumble traveling through his chest. "We can't stay in bed all day" he murmurs.
"Says who?" I grumble in annoyance.
Nate continues gently brushing my hair, he nuzzles against my head and down to my neck. "We should talk. About yesterday."
I immediately close my eyes and bury my face into his chest. "Can we not?" I say against his skin, my voice slightly muffled as I tried to hide against him.
"Lennox" he murmurs, leaning back and moving his fingers to gently turn my face back to him. He sighs warily, my eyes meeting the already slowly healing gash on his forehead. "I'm sorry how everything turned out." Where was the rough man that I'd met all those weeks ago? This man, who's every action sent strong emotions into my heart, was not the same. At least towards me he wasn't, he definitely was hard and cold towards everyone else.
Just not me.
"How can you stay in a pack like that?" I ask as my eyes threatened to fill with tears again. "Who doesn't care you're being challenged to death?"
Nate's jaw clenches tightly, "It's our way."
"Your way sucks" I snap in anger and look away from his eyes. "You can't expect me to sit by and watch every time you get challenged. You can't expect me to be a part of that. It's excruciating" I finish weakly, swallowing hard as I fought my tears.
"Lennox, I've fought every day of my life to maintain what is mine" he says carefully. "This title is mine, it will stay mine."
"What about me?" I ask quietly. "You expect me to watch you die- almost die over and over? How can you ask that of me. Would you watch me almost die over and over and be okay with it?"
"It's different" he counters as his arms tightened around me.
"He was right" I murmur under my breath, knowing full well he could still hear me. "One day, soon, you'll have to choose between that title... and me."
.
My eyes widen in surprise when Nate gently places my laptop on the bed, his eyes meeting my own as i reached for it. "When did you get it?" I ask and open it, immediately noticing it had died and I'd need to charge it before I could use it.
"It's been in the car. I just forgot about it."
"Thank you" I say and he offers a small smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes.
