– This is madness, Arthur, you know it as well as I do! You let her use her powers? You know it's dangerous, as much for her as for us! She could have died, and if she had, what would you have done, tell me?
– Look, I knew what I was doing! Her powers aren't strong enough to kill me yet.
– Don't you realise what you're doing to her?
– I didn't mistreat her! replied Duke Arthur, who was trying in vain to calm Griselda, his younger sister.
But once she started to scold him, which often happened even though they were nine years apart, she wouldn't stop until her brother agreed with her. Which could take a very long time.
– You know what I mean! She wakes up with no bearings, no memories, and what do you do? You make her your servant!
– And what does that mean? As far as I know, I'm still in control of my actions! And this girl doesn't need to know what awaits her!
Griselda sighed. Her brother really was an irresponsible mule-head.
– I know what you want to do... And I still think it's a very bad idea, she murmured. You'll get the wrath of the other families. What will Mother and Father say? The country has been without royalty for almost a century... You can't change everything so easily.
– I don't care what you think. I don't need you or your opinion. Do what you like, but don't interfere with my plans.
– You'll end up seeing that you've got yourself into a real mess...
– That's it! exclaimed Duke Arthur, annoyed by his younger sister's attitude. And now get lost! And don't you let me see you again!
Griselda slammed the door in his face as she left. Exhausted, Duke Arthur slumped into one of the armchairs in the room and took a drink.
Griselda pulled a chair close to the bed where her brother's servant was sleeping peacefully in a large four-poster bed. She looked so serene, even though she had just used a huge dose of magic without being ready for it. She was hardly breathing, and if Griselda hadn't seen her chest rise slightly, she might as well have thought she was dead.
Her brother didn't understand. He didn't understand that this young girl had enormous powers and an important role to play in this world. The other families didn't know about her existence, but Arthur certainly wasn't going to tell them.
"He really is playing with fire" thought the young woman.
She always looked out for him, for her irresponsible brother, but this time he was really going too far.
Lost in thought, Griselda gazed at the young girl with the golden hair. Tenderly, she stroked her forehead. Then she decided to let her rest a little longer and rose noiselessly from her chair. But just as she turned to leave, a hand held her back. The young maid was gripping Griselda's shirt tightly, with more force than she could have imagined.
– Well... It looks like I'll have to stay here, the young woman murmured with a small smile.
She sat back down and remained at the blonde's bedside.
