– Is Noah all right? asked Griselda, looking worried.
– I don't know, but I hope so, replied Clave, her voice trembling.
She removed the Crown from her head and closed her eyes. She held it close to her heart.
– Did you get it back? exclaimed Catherine, rushing over to her friend.
– Yes...
The tears welled up in her eyes again, and she took the ginger in her arms.
– I'm horrible, Cath... I've killed someone...
– Griselda's assistant gasped, dumbfounded. Wh... who?
– My s...
The beginning of Clave's sentence died in her throat. She had just seen that Noah had regained consciousness. His eyelids opened and his golden gaze met the young girl's. She immediately dropped Catherine and moved towards the young man. She still had the Crown in her hand, so she placed it beside her. She knelt down beside the telepath. He sat up slowly and grimaced, his hand on his head. He seemed to have a headache, probably because he had tried to take hold of the Crown. Gently, Clave took hold of his hand, which was gloved as always. Without hesitation, she removed the white glove and made contact with Noah's skin. Now he must have been able to read her mind.
– Why did you do that?
The young girl could see guilt in her friend's eyes. His gaze, trembling, quickly fell to the ground, which he began to stare at.
– Please explain. Why did you do it?
– I... I don't...
The blonde sensed his anxiety and fear. She gently stroked the back of his hand.
"... Gonna disappoint them... My brother... Mum..."
Clave blinked in surprise. At first she thought Noah had spoken, but he hadn't opened his mouth. Then she realised that she could hear the young man's thoughts. What she thought was a one-way connection was in fact mutual. They could communicate mentally thanks to Noah's telepathy.
"Can you hear me, Noah?"
The young girl was no longer paying attention to her friends around her. She was only trying to soothe the one she loved.
"I'm sorry, Clave... You must have felt betrayed... I'm sorry..."
Clave took a deep breath, then sighed slowly. She didn't really feel betrayed by her friend, because he probably had his reasons, but she wanted to understand them.
"Why? she asked. Tell me, please."
She thought he hadn't heard her, but he finally answered in a dead voice.
"Marcus told me that with the Crown... I could see my mother again."
"And did you see her?"
Noah bit his lip, not wanting to look the blonde in the eye.
"I saw her... Dying..."
Clave's eyes widened. Had Noah seen his mother the way the young girl had seen my sister?
The young man suddenly let go of his friend's hand and broke the telepathic link at the same time.
– Sorry, he whispered.
– There's no need to apologise. I was forced too to witness the death of someone dear to me. She died because of me and I'd do everything I can to apologise to her again. So, yes, I understand.
Noah drew his knees up against him and buried his face in his folded arms.
– I'm pitiful, aren't I?
– That's how I love you. Don't change a thing, Clave retorted, looking falsely outraged.
The telepath chuckled and sat up to hug the young girl.
– Thank you, Clave. So much.
