"Dad—Dad?"
Hearing that address, Cheng Ge felt as though he had been struck by a thunderbolt. His mind was buzzing with disbelief. Had he heard wrong? The child was calling the man in the luxury car "Dad"?
Zhang Qian had said that this woman married a second-hand old man from their remote village. How could such a man possibly afford a luxury car? Were country folks suddenly that rich?
Both Cheng Ge and Zhang Qian were stunned. Zhang Qian knew that Zhou Yue Shen's family was wealthy, given the lavish bride price that had become famous in the village. Her mother had even remarked that she should have married Zhou Yue Shen instead, lamenting for several days about it.
Although Zhang Qian had been envious at the time, she thought that even the wealthiest villagers wouldn't change much about their lives. But after experiencing the city's splendor, her heart had longed for something more. No matter how rich someone in the countryside was, it couldn't capture her interest anymore.
Seeing Zhou Yue Shen appear in such a luxury car, with his sharp, aloof profile and an air of unapproachability, made Zhang Qian's self-assured city man seem utterly mundane by comparison.
Zhou Yue Shen noticed the intense stares from both Zhang Qian and Cheng Ge and glanced over. Zhang Qian's expression tightened immediately. She wasn't sure why, but she instinctively took a step back, distancing herself from the still-stunned Cheng Ge.
Zhang Qian had previously been on friendly terms with Zhou Yue Shen's wife, and although she had rarely seen Zhou Yue Shen himself, she did encounter him occasionally. She never liked Zhou Yue Shen much, feeling he had a menacing appearance, as though he might be the type to be abusive. After returning from the military, he had become even more imposing, like a mountain, and he rarely dressed up, always in tattered tank tops with visible holes. It didn't seem like he was someone who had really made a lot of money.
But now, seeing the contrast with her own man and Zhou Yue Shen's obviously well-maintained appearance, she suddenly realized that maybe he wasn't as bad as she had thought.
Seeing Zhou Yue Shen look her way made her a bit nervous. She was about to say something but noticed he had already turned his gaze away, as if she were of no importance.
Zhang Qian's words got stuck in her throat.
Zhou Yue Shen got out of the car and looked at Si Nian, who was holding the sleeping child in her arms. With the cold weather, she was carrying the child with both hands, unable to free one.
He furrowed his dark brows, stepped forward to take the child from her, and spoke in a low, gentle voice, "Let me take her. You've worked hard."
Si Nian shook her head, "Yao Yao hasn't been asleep for long, so it's not tiring. But it's cold, let's head back quickly."
As she spoke, she glanced at the Santana parked in front of them, her expression showing a hint of curiosity.
She looked at Zhou Yue Shen with some confusion, "This car?"
She was puzzled. The old man's savings were with her, and he had never needed to use them. However, the wedding expenses and the bicycle had already cost quite a bit. She wondered if he might have used some of the funds improperly.
Si Nian knew Zhou Yue Shen was too clever to have no preparation at all. She understood that he must have had some plans, but the expenses recently had been substantial. Now he had bought such an expensive car—though she wasn't very knowledgeable about cars, she recognized the Santana as a renowned luxury vehicle.
In this era, it was considered a top-tier luxury car, equivalent to buying several apartments in the city. While she thought it made sense for a boss to buy a better car, Si Nian felt that Zhou Yue Shen didn't seem like the type to buy such an expensive car just for show.
