The surroundings looked quite dated, with power poles older than those in their town, and the roads were not in great condition. There were quite a few people around, but their clothing wasn't any more glamorous.
This was Zhou Ping's first visit to the city. After hearing that her sister was making money in the pastry business, her family encouraged her to go visit. Although they were from the same village, her family was in worse condition, living in the mountains where there weren't many households nearby.
Her grandfather used to be a bandit, and outsiders had stolen things from their village in the past. Later, during the war, they couldn't leave and were forced to settle in Linjia Village.
Zhou Ping had three sisters and only one brother. The three older sisters had all married off. Originally, Zhou Sui Sui was considered to have the worst marriage. But unexpectedly, her life turned out to be the best.
When she came down from the mountain, she found out that her sister's family was doing well and hurried home to tell her family. So, she and her mother went to visit the Lin family.
They happened to arrive while Si Nian was writing a letter to the Lin family, and the village chief's son was reading it to them. That's when the mother and daughter learned that the Lin family's biological daughter had actually moved to the city.
Hearing that the Lin family was going to visit the city, both Zhou Ping and her mother started to have ideas. With such a wealthy relative, who also happened to be their in-laws, it was only natural for them to check it out.
Zhou Sui Sui had always been seen as the least accomplished among her sisters, having married into a family that was not any better than her own. The other two sisters at least contributed some money and gifts back home, but she never had anything to offer. It was a relief that she didn't have to go back and bring money to help the Lin family.
Since Zhou Sui Sui got married, they hadn't visited her, nor did they encourage her to return home.
Zhou Ping was the youngest in the family, just turned eighteen this year. Her mother brought her along this time, hoping that Si Nian could introduce her to a boyfriend from the city. So, Zhou Ping made sure to dress up for the occasion.
While she was excited, Zhou Ping couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy deep down.
Zhou Ping couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as she thought about her second sister, who had always been seen as the least promising among them, now living such a good life. Not only did her husband drive a big truck, but her sister also lived in the city. This thought made her heart sour.
However, when she saw the aging facilities in the area, she felt a bit more at ease. She reminded herself that it wasn't such a big deal; many people from their village had moved to the city for work, and their living conditions were often not that much better. Some were even worse off than if they had stayed at home.
This was also Zhou Sui Sui's first time visiting the city, and she felt a bit nervous. She hadn't expected her mother and sister to come today, insisting that her husband take them along. He couldn't refuse, and once they arrived, they insisted on visiting her sister-in-law's house without getting out of the car.
Her husband and mother-in-law didn't say much, since they were her family. But Zhou Sui Sui knew her mother was the kind of person who was only interested in profit and wouldn't come just for a simple visit. Now, she feared that her mother might say something inappropriate that would upset her sister-in-law.
Meanwhile, Zhou Ping was chattering away, pointing out things around her. But as the car drove into the neighborhood and luxurious buildings came into view, she suddenly felt as if someone had squeezed her throat, leaving her speechless.
