Fu Yang's expression darkened as he stood there, his hand frozen mid-air, unsure whether to pull it back or let it drop.
"Did that driver really not see me?" he thought, frustration simmering beneath the surface.
The vehicle had sped past him so closely that he could feel the rush of wind against his face.
Beside him, the guard finally came to his senses and dashed after the vehicle, shouting, "Hey! We're over here! Wait! Stop!"
Just as his words left his mouth, the driver slammed on the brakes, causing the off-road vehicle to screech to a halt.
The guard let out a sigh of relief and approached the vehicle, noticing Zhou Yuanshen inside. He politely nodded at him before turning his attention to the driver.
"Thank you for stopping. We're here to meet with CommanderFu Yang," he said, trying to maintain a calm demeanor despite the earlier chaos.
The driver, a stout man in military fatigues, nodded in acknowledgment. "My apologies, I didn't see you there. Get in; we'll head to the base now."
Fu Yang finally collected himself and stepped forward, sliding into the backseat alongside Zhou Yuanshen. The guard took the front passenger seat, casting a wary glance at the driver.
As the vehicle pulled away,Fu Yang leaned back in his seat, attempting to shake off the irritation from the near-miss. He couldn't help but wonder about the circumstances awaiting him at the base, hoping this trip would be smoother than the ride itself.
He saluted the person inside the car and said with confidence, "Hello, sir! I'm Xiao Li sent from the Central South District."
The middle-aged man inside the car, who was smoking, glanced at him.
"From the Central South Military District? What brings you to the Northwest?"
The middle-aged man had disheveled hair, a square face, sharp features, dark skin, and some scars, giving him a rugged appearance.
The cigarette he held was as rough as he was.
Just one look from him made Xiao Li feel an immense pressure.
This man was none other than the renowned General Wang Jianguo, one of the three giants of the Northwest.
The driver, a security officer, said, "Sir, you might have forgotten, but our military district specially invited the regiment commander from the Central South District to participate in training with us. This was mentioned by the instructor today."
Wang Jianguo took a puff from his cigarette, as if recalling something. "Oh, I remember this. But what do you need from me?"
After speaking, he ignored the sweat dripping down the other man's forehead and called out to Zhou Yuanshen, who was behind Xiao Li, "Old Zhou, why are you still dawdling? I came all the way here to pick you up! Do you want me to get out and help you?"
Xiao Li was taken aback. "Huh? My surname isn't—"
Before he could finish his sentence, he realized the man wasn't addressing him.
The guy's gaze had fallen behind him.
Xiao Li awkwardly turned his head and saw a man towering over him by at least a head.
Zhou Yuanshen glanced at him and said calmly, "Please move aside."
Xiao Li: "..."
Zhou Yuanshen climbed into the car.
Xiao Li was still trying to process what just happened.
The driver, the security officer, said, "No need to rush. I heard the military district arranged for someone to come pick you up."
