Lavashipping - Helmet P2

Jay and Nya were laughing and joking about in the Mega Monster Amusement Park. They went on a bunch of new rides, had some food and were about to head home.

That's when Nya's phone rang.

She calmed her laughing down and took her phone out of her purse.

"Who is it?"

"It's Kai," she replied as she answered the phone. "Hey, Kai! How's your date going?"

"Is this Kai's sister?"

Nya's expression quickly transformed into one of confusion. "Yes. Why?"

Jay furrowed his brows as he tried to make out what the anonymous woman from the other side of the phone was trying to say. He could feel Nya's emotions shift and he began to feel uneasy.

"Oh my gosh, I- I'll be there soon!" Nya hung up and grabbed Jay's wrist before sprinting to his car.

"Woah! What's going on?!" Jay asked as he watched Nya go towards the driver's seat. He jogged round to the other side of the car.

"Give me your keys!" Nya yelled. Her voice was trembling in panic.

Jay quickly did as told and tossed the keys to Nya, who, without hesitation, got in the car and started driving. "Jeez, Nya!! Slow down!" Jay exclaimed. "What happened?!"

"Kai's in hospital!!" Nya screamed back. She slowed the car down as she rolled into a stop at a red light. Her fingers were curled tightly around the steering wheel. Her body was tense as she attempted to blink back her tears, praying that her brother is okay. Jay slowly reached out to her shoulder and rubbed it in circles. Nya took a deep breath before the light turned green and she continued driving. They sat in the car in silence until they got to the hospital where the Bounty was, meaning that the others got the same call. They ran out of the car, almost forgot to lock it, and went into the building.

Nya ran to the receptionist and asked, "Where's Kai? Kai Smith?!"

"He was brought in 10 minutes ago. If I'm not mistaken, he's in surgery."

"Oh my god... Where is he? Wh-What room?"

"Third floor, Room 314."

"Thank you," Nya grabbed Jay's arm and dragged him up the stairs until they finally saw Lloyd, Zane, PIXAL and Master Wu in the waiting room. "We came here as soon as we could. Is Kai okay?"

"The nurse will get us once he's awake," Lloyd answered.

Jay looked around the waiting room and noticed that something, or someone, was missing. "Wait... Where's Cole?" he questioned.

"We only got a call about Kai. We didn't ask about Cole," Zane explained. "We assume he called the ambulance. We don't even know what happened to Kai... We weren't told."

"He's probably worried sick," PIXAL said with a frown.

Just as she said that, a set of footsteps echoed louder with each step. When the ninja turned towards the sound, they were met with a nurse in a long white lab coat. "Are you here to see Kai Smith?" she asked.

"Yes," Master Wu responded on behalf of everyone.

"Follow me, please."

They did as told and followed her to room 314. Kai was sitting on his hospital bed with bandages around his head. Nya ran over to him with a hug. "I'm so glad you're okay..."

Kai didn't respond. He continued staring blankly in front of him, tears swelling up in his eyes.

"Where's Cole?" Nya asked.

Kai turned his head away from Nya and bit his lip.

"I'm sorry." Everyone's attention turned to the nurse. "Cole Brookstone... He died on impact of the motorcycle crash."

"No..." escaped Jay's mouth. His voice trembled and his hands began to shake as he lifted them to his face, covering his mouth in shock and disbelief.

"The cause of accident was brake failure, and the cause of death was lack of helmet. Kai was really lucky to make it out alive..." Everyone's gaze turned to Kai. Tears escaped his eyes but he didn't let out a single sob. He didn't utter a single word.

"I... I need some fresh air... I'll be on the Bounty if you need anything..." Sensei said as he left the hospital room, barely stopping himself from crying in front of his students. Everyone stood silently in the room and the nurse left them alone for a bit. They were too lost for words to react. Everyone just had frowns plastered on their faces as the silence grew louder after every second that passed.

After a few minutes, Lloyd left followed by PIXAL and Zane who all came in the Bounty. Jay wiped his tears before heading to the car. "I'll be there in a moment," Nya said at a volume which was barely above a whisper. It was just her and Kai in the room. She sat down on the hospital bed with open arms. Without hesitation, Kai practically leaped at Nya and wrapped his arms tightly around her before sobbing uncontrollably into her shoulder. Without a single word, Nya rubbed small circles on his back to comfort him.

"I'm so stupid!" Kai's voice was muffled through the fabric of Nya's blue sweater. "If I never forgot my stupid helmet, maybe there would've been a chance!"

Nya hesitated a bit before finally asking, "What do you mean?"

Kai pulled away and brushed his hands down his face to wipe his tears. "I-I left my helmet at Jay's or something... Cole..." Kai took in a quick shaky breath before slowly choking out between sobs, "H-He gave me his helmet to s-save my life! He knew that we would crash! If my stupid ass didn't forget my helmet, maybe he would've still been alive!"

Nya pulled Kai into a hug again as he burst out into more sobs. "Don't say that..."

"But it's true!"

"Kai... No-one expect for the breaks to randomly stop working. You had no control over that... Everything's going to be okay..."

Kai nodded and Nya pulled away just as the nurse walked in. "Kai is required to stay here for recovery before he can leave. You may visit him as often as you like."

"Thank you. I'll see you tomorrow, Kai!" Nya said, smiling half-heartedly as she left followed by the nurse. "Have some sleep," the nurse reminded.

The door closed and Kai leaned back, staring into the ceiling. "I'm so sorry, Rocky."
