The next day was bright and clear, with the sun shining warmly through the windows of the school. Birds chirped cheerfully outside, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers. Students buzzed with excitement and chatter as they made their way to their lockers, preparing for the day ahead.
Sophia walked to her locker, her mind focused on the upcoming classes. She organized her books and materials with practiced efficiency, her movements quick and precise. She closed her locker and turned to head towards her classroom, but as she turned to walk, she bumped into someone.
Her books tumbled from her arms and hit the floor with a thud. She gasped, her heart skipping a beat as she looked up. Standing there was Aaron, the same boy she had met in the library the day before. He immediately crouched down to help gather her scattered books.
I watched as Aaron quickly picked up my books, his face slightly flushed with embarrassment. I hurriedly joined him, grabbing my materials from the floor. We both stood up, and he handed the books back to me with an apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry," he said, rubbing the back of his head.
I nodded, taking the books from him. "It's okay," I mumbled, feeling a mix of relief and annoyance. I couldn't believe I was going to be late because of this. Because of him, I'll get late for class. What an idiot, a hint of frustration creeping into my mind.
I hurried into the classroom, trying to shake off the awkward encounter. The room was bright and filled with the murmur of students settling into their seats. I chose a spot near the front, trying to focus on preparing for the lesson.
Aaron followed me into the class and took a seat a few rows away, leaving four seats between us. I tried to ignore him, focusing on my notes and the textbook in front of me.
Ms. Phillips, our teacher, walked in and started talking about a new group project. I felt a sinking feeling as she began to pair us up. Group projects were never my favorite, and the idea of working with someone new made me uneasy.
"Okay, now Sophia Kane will be working with Emily Eans," Ms. Phillips announced after pairing up a few other students.
My heart sank a little. I was used to working alone, and the thought of partnering with someone I barely knew made me anxious. I glanced over at Emily, who gave me a friendly smile, and then at Aaron, who sat across the room. I couldn't help but feel self-conscious about the whole situation.
