A dark stain spread across the Western-style coat. Gu Jin stared blankly at her hand, the vivid red of the blood stinging her eyes.

“Mingcheng?”

Gu Jin called his name softly.

The weight of his body pressed heavily on her, making it difficult for her to breathe.

But her body was too stiff to move, and she even eased her breathing slightly, afraid that any movement might worsen Mu Mingcheng's injury and cause more blood to flow.

When there was no response from him, Gu Jin placed her hand on his shoulder and raised her voice slightly, “Mu Mingcheng?”

Still, there was no answer.

Her heart ached as if pricked by needles, the pain was dense and pervasive, and her eyes were welling up with tears.

This was the first time since entering the book that Gu Jin felt an impulse to cry.

Her hand trembled as she repeatedly called Mu Mingcheng’s name.

The scene was quickly brought under control. People gathered around, pointing at the two of them on the ground, their mouths moving but no one knew what they were saying.

“Help him!” Gu Jin’s tears finally spilled as she cried out desperately, “Please help him!”

But no one came forward to assist.

Gu Jin clenched her hand tightly, thinking of how Mu Mingcheng had taken the bullet for her. What did their relationship matter? Was it worth it?

“Cough cough,” Mu Mingcheng suddenly opened his eyes weakly and said, “Stop crying. It’s okay, I won’t die.”

He had survived worse injuries before, hadn’t he?

“You’re awake?” Gu Jin’s tears stopped. Her makeup was ruined, and she looked somewhat disheveled.

Mu Mingcheng thought this was the most beautiful she had ever looked.

“Yeah.” He slowly blinked his eyes.

“But, woman,” he said with a half-smile, “if you keep squeezing my shoulder like that, I might just die from the pain.”

His words seemed to have made him breathe harder, and blood surged again.

Even at such a time, he could still joke. Gu Jin shot him an annoyed look.

But the fact that he could joke meant that his injuries were likely not too serious.

Gu Jin breathed a slight sigh of relief and shifted her gaze to her hand, realizing there was a red bloodstain on Mu Mingcheng’s shoulder, from a wound that was oozing blood.

Startled, she quickly released her grip. Gu Jin furrowed her brows, “Why didn’t you say something earlier?”

Had her squeezing made the wound worse?

Mu Mingcheng closed his eyes again, either unable to speak or unwilling to say more.

“Mr. Mu,” Old Liu pushed through the crowd and, upon seeing the scene, his normally kind face showed an unusual sharpness. He looked around and then lifted Mu Mingcheng off Gu Jin.

“Miss Gu, the injuries are not life-threatening,” Old Liu quickly examined Mu Mingcheng’s wounds and informed Gu Jin, “We need to get him to the hospital immediately.”

“Okay,” Gu Jin calmed herself and nodded, “Let’s go quickly.”

The longer they delayed, the more blood was lost. Even if it wasn’t life-threatening, excessive blood loss was still harmful to the body.
