"I heard from Assistant Fang that your stomach hurts?" Gu Jin carefully chose her words and smiled as she spoke first. "Have you taken any medicine?"
"Not yet," Mu Mingcheng put down his chopsticks, wiped the corner of his mouth, and looked at Gu Jin seriously. "What about you? Have you eaten?"
... This conversation seems off somehow. Why would I take medicine if I’m not sick?
Catching the teasing look in Mu Mingcheng's eyes, Gu Jin realized he was asking if she had eaten.
Raising an eyebrow, Gu Jin didn’t believe for a second that Mu Mingcheng didn’t know she had just had a meal with someone. Fang Yuan had been avoiding her gaze ever since she answered the phone, clearly having already reported everything to Mu Mingcheng.
So, was Mu Mingcheng about to interrogate her?
He couldn’t be that petty, could he?
"Cat got your tongue?" Mu Mingcheng sneered, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair. "Who was the man you had lunch with? What’s your relationship with him?"
The tone of his questioning was bordering on interrogation. If it were any other woman, being grilled by her boyfriend about having a meal with a male friend would certainly cause frustration, likely leading to an argument.
"You mean Tong Lin," Gu Jin said calmly, after a moment's thought. "He’s a schoolmate and colleague of mine. Is there a problem with having a meal to discuss work?"
So the pretty boy’s name is Tong Lin. I’ll have Assistant Fang arrange for someone to look into him later.
Mu Mingcheng was silent for a moment, quietly observing Gu Jin's unflinching expression. Internally, he felt no turmoil.
Initially, when he saw the photos, he was indeed angry. But after thinking about Gu Jin’s personality, he realized she wasn’t the type to go back on her word. Since she had agreed to date him for three months, she wouldn’t easily get involved with someone else during that time.
Then again, her agreement had been obtained through less-than-honorable means on his part, and being two-faced was a tactic she often used.
Annoyed, Mu Mingcheng had purposely ordered cilantro, which Gu Jin disliked, as if that could somehow punish her.
He must have been driven mad by that troublesome woman, Gu Jin. As he ate, he stared at the vibrant green cilantro, imagining it mocking him.
"You might not see a problem, but don’t forget what our relationship is," Mu Mingcheng said, frowning. "Everyone in the capital knows you’re my girlfriend. If people see you dining privately with another man, it reflects badly on me. And then..."
He glanced at Gu Jin, his unspoken message clear.
Gu Jin blinked innocently. Having a meal with a male friend is considered cheating? If people’s minds are that dirty, can I at least offer them some cleaning supplies?
"Don’t overthink it," Gu Jin tilted her chin slightly. "We’re just colleagues. I have no interest in him."
"Heh," Mu Mingcheng scoffed. "You might not be interested in him, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t interested in you." Although the photos weren’t very detailed, from what he could see, Tong Lin’s demeanor around Gu Jin was soft and gentle.
The tone in which Gu Jin mentioned that man didn’t seem quite right either. There’s no way they have nothing going on. Who are you trying to fool?
"No," Gu Jin lowered her eyes, murmuring, "The person he likes isn’t me."
