After discussing with her family, Gu Jin called her aunt, Li Mingyi, from the Cheng family to inform her that she would be moving out.
Naturally, Li Mingyi was opposed to this. She had only one daughter, Cheng Xin, and had always been very concerned about her niece, not much less than she was about her own daughter.
Gu Jin had anticipated this.
She came up with a reason, saying she needed to focus on her postgraduate studies at school.
Studying was a perfectly valid reason, so Li Mingyi, after offering a few words of comfort, did not insist further.
In the following days, Gu Jin moved her things to the university.
There wasn't much to move from the apartment, and there was nothing large that needed to be taken.
Gu Jin packed some clothes and the annotated books left by the previous owner.
Two suitcases and a taxi were all it took.
The student dormitories at Beijing Normal University are divided into double rooms, four-person rooms, and six-person rooms, each with different fees.
The previous owner was well-off and had booked a double room from the start, though she rarely stayed there.
It was mainly used to store textbooks and occasionally as a place to rest when there were too many classes to go back to the apartment.
The dormitory was quite nice, and the roommates' personalities were agreeable. Gu Jin found it more comfortable here than in the apartment.
"Gu Jin, do you need me to bring you some food when I get back?" Shang Siyu, who had applied a thick layer of sunscreen and put on a hat, asked. She was heading out with her boyfriend for a meal and didn't want to risk sunburn on her delicate face.
Gu Jin looked up from her computer screen and saw her new, cute roommate fully prepared. She stood a few steps away, her eyes not wandering towards Gu Jin’s computer screen.
"Thank you, but no need," Gu Jin replied with a smile, explaining, "I’m going to the library soon, and I’ll grab something to eat there. You can go ahead and eat first."
"Alright, then I’ll be off." Shang Siyu nodded and didn’t press further.
Over the years, Shang Siyu had mostly lived alone in this dormitory. Although Gu Jin had visited frequently, they weren’t from the same major, so they didn’t run into each other often.
They weren't very familiar, and becoming overly close suddenly might feel uncomfortable. Maintaining an appropriate distance between people is sometimes necessary.
Shang Siyu’s attitude made Gu Jin, who valued her personal space, feel relieved and able to settle in the dormitory for now.
Once the door closed, Gu Jin returned to researching online.
She planned to write a short story set in ancient times for a manuscript due next week.
Since she had proposed accepting story submissions, she naturally had to adopt a responsible attitude.
The magazine's stories are short and concise, and Gu Jin was deep in thought about the plot when her phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID, Gu Jin answered, "Tong Lin? What’s up?"
On the other end, Tong Lin’s gentle voice came through, "Gu Jin, weren’t we supposed to go out for a meal today?"
A meal?
Gu Jin was momentarily stunned, then slapped her forehead, almost forgetting about the event.
There was a soft chuckle from the other side, teasing, "What, having second thoughts?"
