"Hey, Forth.. how have..how have you been?"
Forth just stared at me blankly, and then his eyes darted towards Kai, my son. He looked back at me again.
"I been good, Park. You? Come on in."
I smiled and nodded, going into the house. Forth's mum saw me and welcomed me in warmly. It wasn't my first visit to the house, so Kai was fairly familiar with her. The minute he saw her, he wanted to go to her instead. I put him down, and he walked over to Forth's mom, who just carried him and asked if he wanted a snack. That boy had her wrapped around his finger.
"Be polite Kai! And not too much of sugar."
Forth's mum tsked at me and brought him away. I looked over at Forth who was just looking at me clueless.
"I definitely owe you an explanation, don't I?"
Forth nodded. Both of us went to the garden where I filled him in on Kai. Kai was my cousin's child. Both her husband and herself had passed away in a car accident over a year ago. Initially, my fanily were looking after Kai in the interim but my father soon wanted to send him to a foster home or orphanage as he realized my marriage proposals were dwindling with people thinking I was a single father. Kai had taken a shine to me and as I had to him also. We went together everywhere and were like 2 peas in a pod.
My father was getting furious that a mere child was single handedly ruining his son's life in his words. I was pissed that my father was being so selfish.
"That's when I had bumped into your parents again at a family event. They saw Kai and were absolutely smitten by him. They also realized my dad was trying to find a groom for me. They decided to get us married instead. I wanted to reach out to you on this 2 weeks ago itself when it was finalised but Kai fell sick with chicken pox so I have been busy with him. Forth.. I am not sure if you are ok...with this.."
"I don't want kids, Park. My mom knows that. So this feels too much to take on. I.. I don't mind getting married to you but a kid.. I.. I can't.."
I looked at Forth, quietly. He had every right to decide on how he wanted his life. It wasn't fair to impose this on him. I nodded.
"Let's not do this then. I can't let go of Kai. And wouldn't. But it's not fair I impose Kai on you either. We have a good friendship going. I don't want it to be strained. I.. I will tell your mom I don't want to marry you. Don't worry."
Forth looked at me pained.
"I'm sorry Park.."
I plastered on a smile, waving away his apology stressing it wasn't necessary. I primarily agreed to get married just so Kai could have a proper family unit so it was important to me that the person I was going to marry would accept him.
I went to the kitchen to look for Kai. I found him being carried by Forth's mother, having a snack. Forth came in too, slightly towering over me. Kai saw me and went "Dadaaa."
I smiled. "We gotta leave soon baby. Catch Grandpa at home before he leaves."
Forth's mother looked at me puzzled.
"Why darling? He's coming here. So you can stay here. Wait till he comes."
I looked at her and then smiled grimly.
"I need to get home to let him know that this engagement wouldn't take place Auntie."
She looked at me in shock, before covering Kai's eyes and throwing the carrot sticks at Forth. I ducked as it came flying in my direction too!
"Forth Jaturaphoom! What did you go tell Park?!"
Shit.
