I tried to duck but failed as the carrots came flying at me. A few baby carrot sticks hit me on my face! "Mae! I was just being honest. Park gets me! Why don't you?!"

"Because I think you are being silly and not giving yourself a chance! You will eventually want kids and what happens if your partner doesn't change his mind? You guys will be stuck in this quantum forever."

"I wouldn't want kids Mae. I am very sure of it."

"You didn't want to get married either, but you are giving it a shot now, aren't you?"

"I am only doing it to make you happy Mae!"

The silence that befell the kitchen was scary. My mother let go of Kai's eyes and passed him over to Park who collected him quietly.

"Take him home, Park. I will call your dad shortly to let him know the marriage is off."

Looking at me, my mom just uttered, "You do not have to marry if you are only doing it to make me happy."

Shit, this was spiraling out of control. I knew my mother was pissed already. Park looked at me. "I will be heading home first. Take care, Forth. See you around when you are free, ok?"

I nodded. "Kai, tell uncle bye bye please. And to Grandma too."

Kai got down from Park who went straight to my mother. He hugged her tightly around the knees where his little hands could reach and waved bye bye to her. She leaned down to hug and kiss him. He beamed at her before making his way to me. He smiled widely at me before hugging my knees too. I just patted his head awkwardly and he went off to Park who held onto his hand, and they went off. The silence in the kitchen after they left was awkward as fuck.

"Mae..."

"It is ok, Forth. Do not do things you do not believe in. Especially if it's a lifelong decision. Mae is sorry for forcing you on this."

"No Mae. It's just that. Look, I am sorry, it did not intend to come..."

My mother cut me off, saying no further discussion on that topic and she called Park's parents as she left the kitchen. My mother did not exactly ignore me, but I knew things were a little strained between us. We both went about our things and day to day happenings, but she started to consciously avoid being in the same room as me for too long. It pained me as I was very close to her and knew I had pushed her away with my words. As a parent, she just wanted the best for me and I knew that too, so why did I not pay more attention to my words?

I was wondering on how to make some kind of headway with her in establishing peace with her when I decided to call Park for ideas. He kept quiet on the phone for a bit before asking me to let him and Kai come over for a play date. She absolutely loved Kai and maybe playing with him will defrost her attitude a little bit. Just to make amends, he asked me to be around too. I agreed instantly, anything to make amends with her.

Park agreed to bring Kai over on Sunday. On Sunday, I woke bright and early, showering, getting ready and going to the toy store for a quick run to buy toys. I had no idea on what Kai liked so I bought stuff that I thought a 4-year-old would like, having googled it the previous night. So, when Park and Kai came over, they came to a smorgasbord of toys ranging from mobiles to collectibles to Lego. Park's eyes opened wide and he looked at me in dismay while Kai's eyes lit up and he wanted to go towards the toys. However, he stopped and looked at Park for permission.

"Dadaa, can I?'" Park finally nodded but told Kai firmly that he could not bring them home. Kai agreed, picked some and started playing. My mom came out, surprised to see them. But funnily, once Kai saw my mother, he just abandoned the toys and ran towards her, crying out excitedly, "Grandmaaaa!"

Even I had to admit, my heart did warm a bit at that sight; seeing how Kai ran to my mother and was enveloped in her arms. And oddly, the boy did not even go near the toys after that, happy to yak and play with my mother.
