I was doing my work when Park called me around 8pm.
"Hey, busy?"
"Not really. What's up? Everything ok?"
"Hmm, do you want to come over for movie night?"
"Sure. Where? Your house or your parents?"
"My parents. Is that OK? We staying here tonight."
I agreed, hanging up the phone, got ready and left. Park didn't say much and sounded like his usual self but I knew him well. Something must have happened. Or else he wouldn't call me over to hang out. It's something he did since university days, calling me or Lam over to hang out if he was having a bad day.
I got to his house about 40 minutes later. I had brought some snacks too. Kai grinned when he saw me and ran to me calling me "Forthieeee". We were all surprised! It's the first time Kai has called out to me. He usually just came to me so we had not really decided on names.
Park was surprised and told Kai he couldn't just call me Forthie. Kai then looked at me and went "Dadaa?"
The silence that fell in the house and amongst all of us was just deafening. I didn't know what to say. I definitely did not hate it though it was surprising. I looked at Park who was just stunned.
"Baby, Kai. You can't call him Dadaa. I'm Dadaaa. That is just.." Before Park could continue, Kai interrupted him, calling me Dadaa Forthie and looking so proud about it. Park groaned softly. He was about to correct Kai when he was stopped by his dad.
"Are you ok with that Forth? Being called that way?"
I nodded; saying I was fine. "Then it's settled. Let Kai call Forth however he wants. He's just a child.".
"But Pa.. he will get confused. If he..he..I don't think it's a good idea.."
"Just because someone is of that name in your life, it doesn't mean anything. It all depends on how the person treats you."
Park kept quiet. I was not sure what exactly happened earlier but figured something must have happened. I looked at Kai, beckoning him over.
"Call me properly."
"Dadaaa Forthie."
"Good job. Thank you. I brought you some snacks from Grandma. Shall we call her and say thank you?"
Kai nodded his head. I laughed as I video called my mom, bringing Kai to the living room to talk to her. He chatted to her gaily, saying thank you and what not. He just laid his head on my chest as he spoke to her. I just kissed his head absentmindedly. My mom saw that but didn't say anything, just cheekily smiling at us.
We hung up and I turned to see Park's dad at the entrance. He smiled at me. He filled me in on what had happened earlier. He told me Park was just in the study room. I asked him to look after Kai for a bit. He nodded and took Kai from me.
I told Kai to pick a movie and that I will join him soon with Dadaa. He nodded and got busy with Park's dad. I went to the study room.
"Hey..." I uttered.
Park turned to see me but immediately turned away. I went closer to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. He didn't say a word but wanted to move away and I held onto him tightly.
"Do not pull away from me now. I am here for you. I want to be here for you Park. Don't push me away please."
Park stopped and I felt him hesitate.
"Forth.."
"Come here." I whispered back. He turned to hug me without another word. I held onto him tightly, murmuring that I was there for him. He didn't say a single word. He didn't have to. My tear stained shirt said it all.
