I just looked at the last message that Forth had sent me before wishing me good night. I couldn't bring myself to acknowledge it as I knew he didn't really want kids, so I don't think it was fair of me to rely on him for any help even if he offered it. So I didn't reply to that message at all, and knowing Forth, he will be pissed but he did not exhibit it.

The next day, it was the weekend. I brought Kai for his usual soccer practice and post it, we went for lunch at this nearby eatery we frequented. The only problem is that Forth loves that place, too. However, seeing he hasn't been around for years, I figured he may not remember that place anymore. But lo behold, we were about to order when Forth walked in, and Kai spotted him!

"Uncle! Uncle! Here! Here!" Kai called out enthusiastically. Shit. I looked up as Forth saw us and grinned. But maybe my face gave it away as his grin soon died out. He came over, ruffling Kai's hair softly, asking if we were about to eat. Kai nodded, and I asked him if he wanted to join us. But I guess Forth could read my mind as he rejected me saying he was going to do a takeaway. Kai looked a bit sad, but Forth invited him to come play some day, and he cheered up instantly. That was the thing about my boy. He needed very little to make him happy.

Forth looked at me. "I will get going. Don't want to impose on you. I can tell when my presence isn't needed. And I guess especially around Kai, huh?"

I grimaced inwardly. It's not that I didn't want Forth around. I just didn't want Kai to get too used and comfortable around him, too. I just looked at Forth sadly as he smiled at me, saying he would text me later. I nodded, and he went off.

The weekend and the week after, it kept me busy with Kai and work, but soon Friday rolled around. It was a public holiday so school was closed. I decided to bring Kai to the water park as a treat.

I was prepping things when Forth's mum called me, asking if she could bring Kai as it was a public holiday. I told her I had plans to go to the water park and asked her if she wanted to join us. She enthusiastically agreed and asked if Forth could come along too.

"Of course, Mae. He can still see Kai if he wanted to occasionally."

About 40 minutes later; we all met at the water park. Forth had 2 floats with him, and I just groaned inwardly. This guy was going to spoil my Kai rotten!
But Forth was amazing with Kai. They went on all of the rides; played hard, floated endlessly, and had tons of fun. I kept up with them but decided to take a break midway, but both boys kept at it.

I sat with Forth's mum as she remarked, "Looks like Kai is having so much fun, isn't he?"

"Just look. It's like we brought 2 kids to the pool rather than  just 1. Don't you feel?"

Forth's mum studied both Kai and Forth horsing around and she laughed heartily, agreeing! But it was really nice to see Kai playing and laughing away heartily with Forth. I called them around midday, saying it was time for a snack. Both boys agreed and came out. Kai ran straight to Forth's mum bypassing me as I stood there with a towel. This brat! He always forgot me when he was with her.

Forth walked up to me and I tossed him the towel. "That brat forgets me every time your mom is around."

"Well I don't. You can look after me if you want."

"Don't be an idiot Forth. You can look after yourself." I growled and turned away, about to head off as I heard him chuckle but then Forth held onto my wrist.

"Let me look after you then. And Kai." He whispered, only for us to hear. I turned to look at him, my eyes searching his but only finding the unwavering clueless honesty as usual.

"Forth.."

"I.. I mean.." Before Forth could complete his sentence, my phone rang. I answered it, only to have my dad tell me cheerfully he found a potential match for me and that they were coming by the house tomorrow to meet Kai and me! I hung up the phone and looked at Forth.

"Who was that?"

"My dad."

"Oh what did Uncle want?"

"He found me a match. They are coming tomorrow to the house and wanted to meet Kai and me."

"Both of you?"

"Yes. He found me a groom who loves kids and is willing to accept Kai."

If I could put a word to the look on Forth's face, it was just one.

Devastated.
