"What happened to him?"
-"Okay Jason, Yn. Look to the camera." Your mother smiles at you both as you were laughing at something Jason told you in your ear.
The two of you turn around to see your mother with her camera pointed at you. Jason takes his hand around your shoulders, holding you close. On a sudden burst of you don't know what, you turn back to the boy and lean up, kissing his cheek. The boy was surprised at first but then couldn't stop the huge grin making its way to his face. Then your mother clicks the camera, chuckling softly at your cuteness and the reaction of the boy who was clearly in love with you but was too afraid to tell you yet. If the slight pink staining his cheek now wasn't enough proof, then the way he looked at you was.
You were his light. His happiness. His childhood best friend. But when you became teenagers his feelings toward you had grown into something more. He blamed hormones in the beginning, but he just couldn't stop falling helplessly in love with his best friend. You were the cutest little girl as kids, and you had grew to become a beautiful teenager.
You had grown, but you hadn't started thinking of boys like that yet, you had Jason. You were used to having a boy around. So when boys started showing interest you didn't understand their intentions other than thinking they wanted to hang out with you and Jason. Jason did a good job at keeping boys away, which didn't bother you at all, you didn't need anyone else, you didn't want anyone else. It wasn't until later that you started to understand certain feelings you had toward your best friend. But when you did, it was too late.
Later on your mother had printed out the photo for you and you kept it on you ever since.
You stroke your finger over the boys face once more, sniffling before you fold it and put it back into your wallet. You straighten up as the doors open and walk with a determined stride toward the wan that stops in front of you. The guys just follow you, but then Jonny turns to the guys.
"I've got this, she's no threat." Jonny tells them.
"I heard that." You shout offended, as you step into the car.
"You go ahead and take the rest of the night." He tells him, but Wade gets in the van anyway, too curious to miss out.
Jonny then goes to sit in drivers seat. Turning to you he hands you a hood. You look at it and at him in disbelief. He just gives you a shrug and a small smile. At first you just look at him, and realise it's the first genuine smile you've gotten from anyone here and it makes you slightly relax. You then roll your eyes and snatch the hood from him, taking it on.
"So, you know Mr. J." Wade asks, though say it more as a statement.
"What possibly told you that?" You scoff sarcastically.
"Multiple things actually." He ignores your sarcasm and goes on. "It was weird seeing him like that." Referring to the picture you had looked at.
"Like what? As a kid?"
"Human." He then says and you frown under the hood.
"What happened to him?" You then ask sombrely.
"The only thing we know for sure is that he fell, or maybe jumped, into a tank of chemical waste. It made him unnaturally stronger and bleached his skin pale white and turned his hair green permanently. The before and after are mostly rumours, like that the resulting disfigurement drove him insane, some think it was the chemical waste that did that to him too." He shrugs.
"You thought he was dead?" Jonny then asks you.
"Yeah.." You say and stay silent. Wade tries to ask you more about how you knew him, but Jonny punches him in the shoulder, silencing him.
Jonny gets a phone call and when he picks up he doesn't say anything, just listens.
"Yes, sir." He says and puts the phone away afterwards.
Once you reach your building, you just take off your mask and walk out, not sparing the guys who that kidnapped you any more of your time. Exhausted and fed up with this, what feels like a life changing event, you go straight to bed about to cry your heart out but the moment your body meets the mattress you pass out, still fully clothed.
...
Back with Jay when you had just left, he stared down at the hand he used to slap you. He didn't care about hurting anyone, it didn't matter if it was a woman, he could hurt anyone with a smile on his face. But it wasn't anybody, it was you.
And now, for the first time after becoming The Joker he felt bad about hurting, no he felt awful, disgusted with himself, he shakes the feeling away. You were lucky, if you thought that was anything hurtful, then you were just as naive as he remembered. But he wasn't just anyone, he was someone that had promised he would never hurt you, and he just did. The look on your face, was complete heartbreak. Jason had just hurt her, the person she trusted more than anyone, her closest and best friend. But that was a person you used to know. He wasn't Jason anymore. He had died when his mother did, when his father killed her a drunken night, in the heat of a dumb argument. And after he killed his father in anger. He wasn't Jason anymore. Being on the run now, he changed his last name and ran away to Gotham, a place the police wouldn't find him or even dare to look properly. He was still that weird outcast but he had used it to his advantage and turned it up a couple notches after he turned into the Joker.
Though with you, for some reason he had a hard time scaring you tonight. You barely seemed scared at all. It was extremely annoying, but also a bit impressive. He could see that you were fully aware that he had the upper hand and that you could easily be killed. But it was like you wouldn't go down without your pride. The only thing you showed a bit scared about, was being sent away from this city, from this job. But it's not safe here for you, staying in this city would show you just how bad someone could get hurt. And that will make you want to leave, he hoped. He shakes his head and go to his room, taking a cold shower before going to bed.
In bed at night, he just shuffles around chasing sleep that won't come. Only thinking about what awful things that could happen to you if you stay here. But you don't want to leave. You don't care about the danger, this job meant a lot to you. Why did he care, he should just throw you out of the city.
He wonders why he even cares at all, why he cares about you being here at all. It was just a crush he had as a young boy. That's what he had tried to convince himself when he decided to not come find you. You deserved better than to have him in your life. Sure, you were his best friend but that was years ago, and you were kids. He wasn't the same. Well, he had always been a little weird and a bit insane, a hint of psychotic. And he had done a some illegal stuff as a kid, but he hadn't let you get to much involved those times. You did clung to his hip as much as you could though. At first he found it annoying, but then he realised he liked it. He liked how you found him fascinating and fun. No one else did, he had never cared what anyone thought though. He had been a strange kid, the outcast, who everyone stayed away from, and you were the cute lovable girl who talked easy with everybody.
You hadn't changed much, you had growned up though, that was clear. You had grown up to become a strong, beautiful, independent woman. Beautiful. You were absolutely, undeniably beautiful. He could still see that little girl that came over to him in as kids, asking him if he wanted to be your friend, but now a grown beautiful woman. You were like a cute doll back then, still are. Not the creepy ones that he would use to scare people, but the sweet and cute ones that you would give a little girl.
Staring up at the ceiling, he makes a decision. He takes his phone, calling Jonny while staring at the same spot on the ceiling. Jonny picks up and Jay starts talking before he says anything.
"Leave someone to watch her, out of site. Follow her, and keep me posted on everything, and who she associates with. I want all information on them too."
"Yes, sir." Jonny confirms.
He hangs up and just lay there, thinking about you. His phone in his limp hand by his side. You must be protected if you're going to stay here, atleast until you realise the danger and leave on your own free will. Which you will. He then gets an awful feeling inside him, at the thought of not seeing you again.
Can he really make you leave? Does he want you to? If it's to protect you, he has to. But will he then be selfless enough to let you go?
