"She's a stubborn one."
-Days have gone by since you found out your childhood best friend was alive. You haven't done anything to find him, not risking him sending you away. Which you didn't doubt he could do, and easily so too, with a snap of his fingers. In the blink of an eye, you could probably stand on the porch of you mothers old house back in that town you so desperately needed to get out of.
You didn't tell anyone about what happened with you meeting The Joker and who he is to you. You try not to think about him, though it's impossible, with the thousands of questions flowing in your mind.
You concentrate on work and your new friends. Addy and Sophia are being so helpful and welcoming. Andrew, one of the cameramen, hangs out with them a lot so you get to know him as well. He's been flirting and usually you humour whoever flirts with you, but you had noticed Sophia's interest in him, not that you were really interested before but it made you determined to decline his pursuits and shift them toward her.
You don't know for sure but you think Abby's family is apart of something illegal, but it doesn't seem like she's apart of it. She hasn't told you anything, you've just picked it up from things she said and the vide you got when you asked what they worked with. Your boss is strict but also very nice. He used to anchor before, so he helps and gives you lots of tips. You love your new job and workplace, feeling very content.
You roam the city at daytime, seeing the sights, walking around, and trying the cafe's close by to find your favourite coffee. Going shopping with Sophia and Addy. Your mother's nurse had called to update you on her.
At work you were told about certain parts of the city to stay away from, but it was all mostly bad at night. You often heard sirens passing by your building at night. Sophia told you about Batman, the vigilante. She also told you with dreamy eyes about a Bruce Wayne, some billionaire bachelor. She joked about never having seen the two in the same room, but then realised she hadn't really been in the same room with any of them. Making you roll your eyes and laugh with her.
So the days went on like your best friend hadn't just came back from the dead. Looking different, very different. You search the internet, asked your friends or other colleagues about the Joker and what they knew. They didn't know a lot for sure, but it was clear everyone feared him. Not just by his actions and reputation, but also his looks. They admitted, when they had once gotten a good look at him, he wasn't disgusting to look at, but they still felt weird about his appearance, it didn't look natural. To you, it didn't fear you, sure he was intimidating but that wasn't just because of his appearance.
It fascinated you. You might've recognised him is you looked at him long enough, even if he hadn't used the nickname he gave you.
"Smiley, look!" You as a 10 year old, point toward something funny and you both laugh.
"Smiley?" Jason, then asks confused.
"Yeah, it's my nickname for you. Because I like your smile." You tell him. Jason's cheeks turns pink and he smiles. "Like that!" You point to his grin. Making him laugh.
"Thanks, Speedy."
"Speedy?" You ask, and he chuckles.
"Yes, because you're so impatient, when you want something done you do it right away and fast.. Speedy." He says with a shrug. You look down, trying to hide your embarrassment.
"I should be more patient, mom and dad tell me I need to practice on my lack of patience."
"Sure, being impatient can be a negative trait. But in your case, it makes you work harder and faster... And you're kinda cute when you loose your temper." He tells you shyly. You smile up at your best friend.
You smile at the memory, but then feel sad. So you go to get ready for work, trying to distract your thoughts away from him.
...
Joker is sitting in his living room alone, except for one maid walking around in the kitchen making him a snack. When she gives it to him, he waves her off, dismissing her. He looks at the screen, glaring at your face on his screen as you tell the news to Gotham's citizens. Your face is so beautiful it's making him angry. Why do you have to risk it just for a stupid job. A job you do really well at that, you speak with confidence. Your public speaking skills is excellent as you deliver the news to the people watching. Conducting the interview with some politician perfectly, not showing your own opinions in any way, staying neutral. When you have a conversation with a reporter on scene from the studio and the connection turns bad you handle it nicely. But he can barely hear what you're saying as your face is distracting his every senses.
He's to busy glaring at you to notice the elevator door open, revealing Jonny. Since he doesn't seem to get the boss's attention from just walking in, he clears his throat. Still no response. He takes a few steps toward the man sitting in his lounge chair with a whisky and chewing angrily at a carrot or something. Jay doesn't even care or think about what he's eating right now. He could be poisoned for all he knew.
He then moves his glare from you to the carrot in his hand and throws it back into the bowl. Then returning his glare to you again. You are already messing with his head, becoming a distraction and making you a weakness.
Jay then finally feels the presence of someone else in the room. "Talk to me Jonny."
"She's a stubborn one." He then tells him with a chuckle. "Has made no intention of packing up to leave. Rather making herself comfortable in the apartment."
"What's so important about this job anyway?" Jay asks him, angrily gesturing to the screen, still not moving his glare from you.
"Not sure, but she seems to enjoy the work, and I believe it's not as usual yet for a woman to anchor a news station. She might not have gotten a change before this." He tells him. (Just humour me, it's not really like that anymore, I think, I don't know.)
Jay grumbles then turn to Jonny, seeing his expression, making him rolls his eyes. Jonny's giving him a knowing smirk. He was the only one allowed be like this with him, having worked for the Joker a long time now.
In return for his loyalty Joker promised to take care of Jonny's family. His daughter and wife hidden well among the people in Gotham, living a normal life, no one could connect them to The Joker. They were safe, and with Jonny's income, they lived well. Jonny became more than just an employee, he became a friend over the years, well to what Jay would call a friend, which wasn't very much. But Jonny was extremely observant, so some things he had firgured out on his own. The whole team of henchmen and hackers get to be a little more relaxed around Joker after years of working for him. But nothing compared to Jonny's freedom to speak his mind to the boss, though he does it in private to keep up the fearsome facade of the Joker, which is Jonny's job to help keep up.
"Report." Jay then tells him, referring to you and what you've been doing.
"Well, as you can obviously tell, since you've been staring at her for the last hour, she's at work." Jonny tells him and Jay moves his glare to him. But he just raises his hands, with a small chuckle. "But aside from work, she's been seeing the city at daytime. Walking around mostly, so I've had two guys follow her instead of one just in case. She seems to have befriended the girls at her work, visited their homes and them to her. There is one guy from work who seems to have set his eyes on her." He watches as his head whips to him, making Jonny chuckle again. "Don't worry, she doesn't seem interested."
Jay tries to ignore the relief feeling that gave him, and goes to glare at the screen again when you come back into view.
"Got the information you wanted. All we found on the people she's associating herself with. Everyone from her workplace." Jonny tells him and puts four files down on the table beside him.
"Has she been out at night yet?" Jay asks, still looking at you while you end the news for tonight.
"Not yet, but it's just a matter of time, she's a curious one." He tells him and Jay growls.
"Get Wade to take care of Mr Wilson. He's getting on my last nerve, I want it taken care of." He tells Jonny, turning to the files and starting to look them over.
"I'll get Wade on it right away." Jonny says and receives a nod in affirmation.
